Tip #2: Check Connections and Fittings Assuming you have a home sewer line, there are a few places you should check for proper maintenance. First, check all connections and fittings to make sure they are tight and not leaking. This includes the connection at the house to the main sewer line, any connections between sections of pipe, and any fittings such as cleanouts, traps, and vents. Second, check the slope of your sewer line. The ideal slope is between 1/8 and 1/4 inch per foot, but no steeper than 1/4 inch per foot. This ensures that water will flow through the pipe without creating too much pressure that could cause a break. Third, inspect your sewer line for any cracks or breaks. Even small cracks can let in tree roots and soil that will clog your pipe over time. If you find any cracks or breaks, have them repaired by a professional as soon as possible.
