In the Okanagan Valley spring is on the horizon. With the changing of the season it’s time to consider our trees. What do we need to do to take care of our trees before spring arrives? Once it has become warm enough and the ground no longer frozen trees come out of dormancy. If there was little snowfall that winter the soil may not have enough moisture in it from the melt. During this time it is important to ensure there is enough moisture in the ground. Trees will need water before they leaf out. Check the soil moisture to make sure there is moisture from 4-6 inches below the surface. Fertilizing should also be done at this time. Fertilizer should be applied along the drip line of the tree. Finally trees should be inspected by an Arborist in early spring. An Arborist can assess any dead or broken branches and prune them if needed. It is important to do this while pests and diseases are still dormant.
