Almost every day we come across this question with our customers - what's the difference between mm and mil? It can be confusing, but also pretty simple once explained. For actual plank thickness, you’re looking for measurements in mm. - Glue down vinyls can range from 2mm to 5mm thick - Floating vinyls are normally about 4mm to 8mm thick - Laminates usually range from 7mm to 12mm in thickness The flooring wear layer is measured in mil (one thousandth of an inch). A mil is not the same as a millimeter, as roughly 40 mil equals 1.0 mm. The wear layer is one of the most important specifications when it comes to looking for a floor. The big box stores sell products that look the same as ours but have only a 4mil to 6mil wear layer. Ideally, we recommend a minimum wear layer of 12mil. We also have many products that are designed for residential use and have 20mil wear layers which can also be used in a commercial space (for example: Adura Max, COREtec Plus, and ProGen). If you have a busy household or large pets, we would probably recommend a thicker wear layer. Don’t be fooled into thinking that more expensive flooring is always the better choice. While that is often the case, sometimes you are paying for the name, not necessarily the quality.
