Pressure reducing valves (PRV) are the heart of your plumbing system. In certain areas the pressure can be so high that it will cause damage to your whole entire plumbing system. You can experence burst pipes, dripping pipes, or worse a rupture in your yard; under a slab, in the walls, or the ceiling. Water pipes don't discriminate. When the pressure gets too high you will have problems. If you notice that your pipes are making knocking sounds or rattling, these are signs you may have a bad PRV. Anyone can go to a hardware store and pick up a pressure gauge and they cost around $15, it's one of the best safe proof preventives you can do for your business or residence. PRV's do two things, of course they regulate the pressure but they also control the flow of your water. You can have really high pressure and no flow or you can have really low pressure and an extreme amount of flow. It depends on the situation & every place will be different. These gauges will measure the pressure & are easy to use, all you do is hook them to the bottom of your water heater or hose bib and read the pressure. It should not be above 80 that's per Ga plumbing code. There's nothing worse than having high pressure and it ruins all of your nice fixtures. I've seen it time and time again. It can get so high that it ruptures a water heater or the temperature and pressure (T&P) pops on the water heater. Save future time and money get a pressure gauge and see what your pressure is at.
