Unattended cooking is the leading factor in home cooking fires.
• In 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,600 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for fires.
• Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
• Cooking equipment was involved in almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths.
3 tips:
• Tip 1-Move things that can burn away from the stove. This includes dishtowels, bags, boxes, paper and curtains.
• Tip 2-Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over.
• Tip 3-In case of an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed until it’s cool.
