How often have you heard that it takes 21 days to form a new habit? Well, it's not that simple: Some individuals make a new habit stick in as little as 18 days but on average it takes 66 days - that's over 9 weeks! The idea of 21 days comes from a 1960 book called Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon who noticed his patients seemed to take about 21 days to get used to their new faces. So when researchers from University College London examined how long it takes for new habits to form, they were surprised to find that in reality it takes on average three times as long! Clearly getting used to new facial features after plastic surgery and adopting a new habit are two very different things. Give yourself the time you deserve because rushing and pressuring yourself will be counter-productive. Maybe you've been in a situation where you tried Therapy for a couple sessions, a Self-help book, a quick day seminar, subscribed to a weekend of yoga, listened to a podcast for a month, downloaded a recipe book for a high pressure diet or downloaded some video exercise program only to find you couldn't sustain it? Change takes not only time but it needs to be connected to three other important factors: Reminder, Routine and Reward. Working with a Nutritional Mental Health Therapist and Personal Growth Consultant can help meet all three factors call Salt'n'Pepper Consulting LLC today, set up an appointment!
