Yesterday afternoon we received a call from a gentleman with a MINI (2013/R56) with a loud knocking noise from the engine. We were able to perform a mobile diagnostic at the customer's home to save risking the engine. Our initial diagnosis is that the timing chain on this N16 engine is likely to be at fault. We arranged recovery to the workshop where we've been able to flush and drain the oil. No debris found in the oil, and with the rocker cover removed - luckily, the timing chain guides seem intact. Far from fixed yet but there is a good chance the tensioner failed on this engine so we've ordered a part and will install tomorrow. We're desperately hoping this customer called us just "in the nick of time". For all your BMW and MINI diagnostic, servicing and repairs call us now! UPDATE: Great news, timing chain tensioner resolved the issue. We also noticed the drive belt wasn't in the best condition and to keep it that way we replaced the belt tensioner at the same time.
