Each day this week, we are sharing a different factor that puts LGBTQ+ individuals at risk for mental health problems. Today we are highlighting challenges in coming out.
Aside from the usual anxiety experienced by LGBTQ+ people when they decide to share an important part of their identity; there are other factors that place mental health at risk.
Positive shifts in societal acceptance of LGBTQ+ people have allowed for youth to share their sexual orientation or gender identity at a younger age. While this is definitely progress, it can however have a detrimental effect on youth’s mental health if they are not in a supportive environment.
Four in 10 LGBTQ youth report that the community in which they live is not accepting of LGBTQ people. 40% of US homeless teens who came out were thrown out by their parents onto the streets.
