Ketamine has been in use for over 50 years as an anesthetic and more recently for depression, anxiety, and pain treatment. It has been found to rapidly reduce depressive symptoms in 70% of treatment resistant patients. As the days get shorter, many suffer from seasonal affective disorder, another form of depression. Ketamine can be used as an IV, intranasal, and oral formulation with great effect. No referral is required. Generally the treatment requires 6 infusions scattered over 2-3 weeks, but some do fine with home-based ketamine nasal spray and oral troches alone or after an initial infusion series. Insurance does not cover this treatment directly, but we provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance if they cover out-of-network expenses. We do an initial consultation and then start the treatment when appropriate. Recent lab work is definitely helpful, but we may suggest further testing. Medical problems that interfere with us using ketamine include active heart disease, strokes in the past year, uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension, schizophrenia, and certain personality disorders.
