Statement by Muslim and Sikh Communities On Monday 25 May 2020, Guru Arjan Dev Ji Gurdwara was attacked by an individual who caused extensive damage to the windows and doors. This individual is also known to have later attacked a member of the public on Normanton Road. We, the undersigned representatives of the main Muslim and Sikh communities, condemn this senseless act without reservation. Desecration of places of worship is unacceptable and can never be justified nor condoned. The Muslim and Sikh communities have been living together in Derby in peace and harmony for many years. These types of senseless acts will not separate us. The actions of individuals do not represent our communities. Whilst the male who attacked the Gurdwara left a convoluted note referencing ongoing issues in Kashmir, we request members of both the Sikh and Muslim Community not to engage in debates and arguments relating to this incident as the full facts have not been disclosed due to the ongoing police investigation. We also ask the Police to thoroughly investigate the incident and apply justice accordingly.
