Reading problems are not unusual. In fact, many children struggle with learning to read. According to a recent report, two-thirds of US students are not proficient readers. The average 8th grade reading score has declined. Only 35% of 4th graders were proficient in reading in 2019. And just 35% of 8th graders could read at grade level. * That means, the majority of students do not read as well as they should. So, if your child struggles with reading, they are more typical than unusual. However, the problem will persist and does not just get better over time. A student who is not proficient by fourth grade will continue to struggle with reading. This does not need to be the case, because with proper instruction, any student can overcome their difficulty and become an excellent reader.
