Pastor’s Note; Dec. 2, 2019 Last week I used these lines to reproduce a poem written by Robert MacGimsey who noted that we still don’t know who Jesus is. The prophet Isaiah reminded Israel and us more than two and one-half millennia ago that the Christ would be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. This coming Sunday we shall be reminded again that the helpless babe laying in a manger was and is Mighty God. Let us come together and explore how humanity’s love of power, is altered in the coming of the Christ-child. The eternal God is twice in Revelation called omnipotent, but the Scripture as a whole does not make such a claim. We are not called to be admirers of power, but rather followers of the Lord Join with us Sunday in thankfulness that the birth of Jesus, the incarnation of God, changes our understanding of real power. A baby is recognized as a better definition of mighty power than the legions of Rome or the Big Bang of the universe. We know well that the gods have power to create. All religions recognize this. But the birth of Christ tells us that the real power is the power to transform and change a hard heart and a proud spirit with which most of humankind is afflicted. Come during this Advent season and bow down before him who can command 10,000 angels and each of us who is tender and mild.
