(Original)Tibutaries Solo exhibition by Trey Hurst 03 June- 02 July 2023 In Tributaries, the artist chooses to celebrate change and transformation through an array of new works on canvas, paper, and wood. His abstract depictions of water-carved landscapes in “Tributaries,” alongside the drifting brushwork of his first large-scale mural, invite the audience into the artist's ever-evolving world. In works like “Atchafalaya” he weaves shredded canvas by hand into new surfaces, dramatically shifting his canvas toward the realm of sculpture. Artworks that illustrate the core of his practice, like his ink drawings on Saa paper, illuminate the techniques and forms which feed these new bodies of work as winding tributaries feed into wide rivers. When considering this collection of work, the artist asks his audience to move beyond the fear of disruption, disillusionment, and failure which sometimes haunts us as we embrace change. And to instead celebrate opportunities for renewal, clarity, and growth through transformation.
