While shooting the searise series in 2014 I managed to pick the coldest days! This is on the Northumberland Straight.
I am often asked, "What do you take photos of?" or "What type of painting do you do?" The simple answer is, it depends on the day. The more complicated is that my work often, but not always, has links to my past. As a prairie girl living on the ocean, my passion for nature and wide open spaces can be seen in a majority my work. My biology degrees are also an influence. My appreciation of history and architecture is also evident.
I work on a project-based basis so I create challenges to stretch myself artistically, such as the portraits in my Look Up! series. Taking photos of strangers is not always easy! In another current project in progress I located historic brothels in my Paris: Maisons Closes project. That's one way to see Paris!
Often one project leads to another. While creating Look Up! I was literally, and often, looking up and I discovered the visual interest of wires. Wires for a westerner, who grew up with most wires buried, have always been very noticeable to me. At first in a very negative way; aren't they ugly? Then with more thought, I think of all they do, the communication they provide, and especially the connection (and disconnection) created between people.
