• How much does it cost?

We advise that you order at least 3 copies of your Deed Poll so that you can quickly notify all relevant record-holders of your change of name. However, this is not a requirement.
You can easily and securely pay by PayPal, and if you do not want to, you can pay by Bank transfer, Postal order, or cash on collection from our Office.

• Who can witness a Deed Poll?
  
• Your witness must be aged 18 or over.
• Your witness must know you, and not be suffering from any mental incapacity.
• Your witness must be independent of you. As such, your witness can be a friend, neighbour or colleague, but they may not be a relative, your partner, or someone you live with.
• Your witness must be present when you sign your Deed Poll
• How long will it take for me to change my name?

Your Deed Poll will be posted to your address within 24 hours, once the payment is received. As your documents will be sent by First Class Recorded delivery you should receive them the day after.
After receiving the documents, you must sign the Deed Poll, along with your witness. Now you will be able to notify all relevant record-holders of your name change, usually by sending them the original Deed Poll. To speed the process, you can order more than 1 copy (please select the no. of copies at the checkout).

Please note that if you order extra legal copies of your Deed Poll, all the copies must be signed by you and co-signed by your witness at the same time.

• Can I apply from abroad?

Currently, Baraka UK Deed Poll Service is only available for UK residents.

• I am not British. Can I apply?

Baraka UK Deed Poll Service is available for all UK residents. However, if you are a foreign national who are living in the UK, you should be aware that changing your name by Deed Poll will only be effective as regards your documents and records in the UK.
In order to update your passport, documents and records in your country of origin, you will have to follow the procedure required by your Government. For instance, they may require your Deed Poll to be witnessed by a solicitor, or “legalised”, then translated. Our Certified Translations Service is available for your Deed Poll to be translated to Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. Please check with your Consulate what is the procedure required in your home country.

• Can I change my child’s name?

A child’s legal name can easily be changed by Deed Poll providing everyone with parental responsibility (PR) for the child consents to the name change.

Parental responsibility is a legal term; it means that you are responsible for, and have the right to be consulted about, the child’s health, education, religion and welfare.  To change a child’s name, those with parental responsibility must consent to the name change.

In the United Kingdom, the mother always has PR, the father will also have PR if:

• England & Wales: Married to the mother at birth, or named on the birth certificate from 1st December 2003.
• Northern Ireland: Married to the mother at birth, or named on the birth certificate from 15th April 2002.
• Scotland: Married to the mother at any time after birth, or named on the birth certificate from 4th May 2006.

No Authority (such as the Passport Office, School, GP surgery, etc.) would allow a child to be known by another name without satisfying themselves that everyone with parental responsibility has consented to the name change. For more information regarding PR, please refer to the UK Government website.

PLEASE NOTE: If both parents have parental responsibility, but consent from one parent i.e. the mother or father cannot be obtained, unfortunately Baraka UK Deed Poll cannot issue a Deed Poll for this child. In this case, the parent who wish to change the name of his/her child can decide to apply for a Specific Issue Court Order. If you want to instruct a lawyer, you can find a Solicitor accredited by the Law Society.

• What about changing gender?

Changing one’s gender is much more complex than only changing one’s name or surname by Deed Poll.
Throughout the United Kingdom, if you want your acquired gender to be legally recognised, you need to apply to the Gender Recognition Panel for a Gender Recognition Certificate.
Transgender people may want to apply for a Statutory Declaration for Change of Name, which is a document declaring one’s name change, similar to a Deed Poll. The difference however is that a Statutory Declaration is created and signed in the presence of a UK Solicitor, Notary Public or anyone who is authorised by law to hear it. If you want to instruct a lawyer, you can find a Solicitor accredited by the Law Society.
