What is DevOps?

Development Operations (DevOps) professionals create tools and software for supporting, automating, and optimizing every stage of the software development lifecycle, from testing to maintenance. In order to improve the stages of software development, DevOps professionals facilitate cross-team communication, act as liaisons between stakeholders, and use lean and agile methodologies. In contrast to tech areas like cloud computing, DevOps generally requires proficiency in scripting and coding languages such as C, C++, Java, and Python. Data visualization is also an important skill to possess when working in DevOps. Professionals must analyze complex data, identify patterns, and extract valuable insights to help inform decisions.

Why Learn DevOps

Learning DevOps is about more than just in-demand software development skills. Successful DevOps professionals are expert problem solvers who use collaboration and big-picture thinking to break silos and drive valuable organizational improvements.

DevOps professionals directly impact business outcomes by:

  • Driving efficiency through automation

  • Enhancing processes using lean and agile methodologies

  • Improving the customer experience

An education in DevOps offers a well-rounded skill set and knowledge of a diverse range of tools and programs to apply throughout the full development life cycle. During the UIC DevOps Bootcamp, powered by Fullstack Academy, you’ll learn and practice in-demand skills and receive essential career support to help with your job search.
