Whenever I thought of German beer, I thought of Bavaria, and steins. There is even a Hofbrauhaus in Berlin! Sure, enjoy a night there, experiencing the festival atmosphere with its picnic style tables, servers in dirndls and lederhosens, and traditional music. But, give yourself some time to explore Berlin's smaller breweries too! Marcus Brewery is perfectly located right by the main square; Alexanderplatz. It is a cozy space, decorated exactly how you would expect. I took a seat at a small table by the window and ordered whatever the closest thing they had to a flight was. Due to the purity law, that states beer has to be made with only barley, hops, water and yeast, I was ready to sip on simple styles. I ended up with a light, a dark, and a red. The red added some excitement to the tasting! I tried the light first, getting a whiff of lemon to start. It had a crisp and hoppy taste, bolder than usual for the style. The dark had medium body. It had brown sugar undertones and a hint of gingerbread, but was actually quite bitter. The red had little scent but an assertive bitterness. It had an additional graininess to it with a sweet aftertaste. Along with stellar beer, you can shop for spices, liqueurs and mustard. Their mustard looked delicious! They had a bunch of different types; honey dill, plain honey, and my personal favorite: Berlin beer mustard. While I came for the beer, you can order food as well: rich regional dishes such as fried sausage, crusted roast, pork knuckle and more!
I enjoyed the time there, and loved getting the vibe of the place. I've found that breweries have a similar ambience, regardless of the country you're in. Except in Germany. The Germans take such pride in their beer, they want you to know you're in a German craft brewery.
