Let's Talk Trash and Recycling

Trash Service

As you may know, the City of Delta offers trash service to residential and commercial customers within city limits. We currently utilize 2 trash trucks to collect refuse throughout the City. A map detailing sanitation pickup days can be viewed in the slideshow below.

What you might not know is that there are certain dos and don’ts residents and businesses can follow to streamline trash collection.

On your scheduled pickup day Do:

  • Set your container out by 7:00 am that morning
  • Make sure everything fits inside of your trash receptacle and that the lid is closed.
  • Check that your container is 3ft away from any cars, fences, mailboxes, or other impediments.
  • Place the receptacle so that the opening of the lid will face the trash truck when it stops.
  • Make sure that all trash is bagged.

Don’t put the following items in or around your receptacle:

  • Concrete, steel, bricks, or large logs/limbs over 2” in diameter
  • Construction material/waste too heavy for collection
  • Furniture or items too bulky to fit in the receptacle
  • Hazardous materials
  • Hot ashes from fireplaces
  • Medical waste/sharps
  • Oil, antifreeze, paint, and other liquids
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Refrigerants/CFCs

By following these Dos and Don’ts residents and businesses can help make trash collection efficient and effective. Noncompliance with the above-listed requirements may result in the skipping of service. As always, if you have any questions please reach out to Public Works staff by calling (970) 874-7913.

Recycling Services

The City provides free recycling of brown and clean cardboard to residents and businesses within the Delta City limits. Though the City does not collect cardboard curbside, residents and businesses can drop it off at 640 West 4th St west of the Public Works Building. Cardboard should be dropped off in the fenced-in area behind the Public Works Building. Be sure to remove all styrofoam, plastic, and spacing materials from the cardboard before dropping them off.

If you are interested in more recycling options, Double J Disposal offers FREE drop-off recycling at their recycling center located at 21538 Austin Road, Austin, CO 81416 Tuesday - Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. They also offer twice monthly curbside recycling services for a monthly fee.

If using the drop-off service, pre-sort your recyclables by type for a quick and easy drop-off. Double J accepts:

  • Plastic (#1 and #2 ONLY) - often drink bottles, plastic food containers, milk jugs, and shampoo bottles fit this criterion.
  • Paper - newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office paper, brown paper bags, junk mail, paperback books, shredded paper, gift wrap, telephone books, etc.
  • Paperboard - cereal boxes, soda containers, Kleenex boxes, paper towel tubes, shoe boxes, manila folders, etc
  • Cardboard - clean, un-waxed corrugated cardboard, which has 2 layers of cardboard separated by a central wavy piece of cardboard
  • Glass (Bottles & Jars Only) - Glass jars, bottles, and jugs of any single color.
