The Short Story and Dialogue

February 5-10, 2023

Teach Bhride, Tullow, County Carlow

Ireland

Fee 1,400 Euro

Includes tuition, meals and accommodation

This course will focus on the short story and how dialogue works. We will also be examining style, epiphany, syntax — and long and short sentences. The syllabus, which is yet to be composed, will be posted in October. This is the only course Claire Keegan will be running on the short story in 2023. Anyone with an interest in the short story is more than welcome to attend. It may be of particular interest to those who read, write, study, teach or edit fiction.

Breakfast is a continental/help yourself, but the kitchen will be left open round the clock and may be used at any time. A hot lunch and dinner will be served daily. Every participant will be provided with a plain, clean, no-frills room with a desk — and most have an en-suite bathroom. If you MUST have an en-suite, please let us know at the time of booking. There are shower rooms down the hall, and washbasins in most non-en-suite rooms. The food is wholesome and home-cooked. Dietary restrictions/preferences will be catered for — but we much appreciate these details being communicated well in advance of your arrival, on your booking form.

Participants will arrive and settle in on the late afternoon of the 5th, before dinner is served at 6pm. Departure is before lunch on February 10th, around 1pm.

Teach Bhride has 3 bedrooms near the lift for people who may have difficulty with stairs. If you have a physical disability, won’t you please let us know at the time of booking? The centre also has a ramp for those who are wheelchair bound. There are bathrooms on all three levels. Parking is free and plentiful, and there’s WiFi. Buses run daily between Tullow and Dublin — but not often. The bus/train service from Carlow to Dublin is much better and participants can book a taxi.

A non-refundable deposit of 800 Euro secures your place, payable by cheque or electronic transfer. The balance is owed on the first day of the course. All participants must complete a booking form.

This course will be fully subscribed. If you express an interest in the course after the course is fully subscribed, your name will be placed on the waiting list. We do get cancellations. If you book a place and cannot attend, we cannot refund travel costs. If, for any reason, the course is cancelled, your deposit will be fully refunded or credited towards any future course. Bookings are always made on a first come, first served basis.

Please note that if you express interest in booking a place and we then do not hear from you within 5 days, we will assume you are no longer interested in joining us. We may send a reminder but will not chase you for your booking form and deposit.

If you are making an electronic transfer for your deposit, PLEASE USE YOUR NAME AS A REFERENCE FOR THE TRANSACTION! Without this, we will have difficulty confirming your place on the course, not knowing where the deposit came from. Thank you. The balance of your fee is payable to Claire after dinner on February 5th.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you’ll join us in February.
