Sankranti
san · kran · tee
During this period, India's most prominent harvest festival, Makar Sankranti, is celebrated to mark the end of the winter season while welcoming longer days due to the northward movement of the sun. Also known as Sankranti, this auspicious festival is a seasonal celebration in honor of Lord Surya, the Sun God, as we move from darkness to light.
The day of Sankranti every 80 years is postponed by one day to compensate for the difference caused by the sun's revolution around the earth. The sun starts its Uttarayan or northward journey on Makar Sankranti. As a result, Uttarayan is another name for this festival. Farmers all over the country are hoping for a good harvest on this day.
