Quran Turkish Translation and Concise Commentary Book Description: Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi was born in 1878 in Elmalı district of Antalya. He completed his primary and secondary education and memorization in Elmalı. He went to Istanbul with his uncle Mustafa Efendi to further his education and settled in Küçük Hagia Sophia Madrasa. He received permission from Mahmud Hamdi Efendi from Kayseri, where he continued his lessons at the Beyazıt Mosque. From now on, his teacher was called Büyük Hamdi and he was called Küçük Hamdi. Meanwhile, he graduated from Mekteb-i Nüvvâb with the first place. He learned literature, philosophy and music with his own efforts. He worked to develop a constitutional monarchy model suitable for Islam instead of a European-style constitutional monarchy. After working as a lecturer for two years at Beyazıt Madrasa, II. He entered the first parliament of the Constitutional Monarchy as an Antalya deputy. Later, he worked in the Letter Office of the Sheikhulislam. He taught fiqh at Mekteb-i Nüvvâb and Mekteb-i Kudât, usûl-i fiqh at Medresetül-mütehassısîn, logic at Süleymaniye Madrasa, and foundation law at the Civil School. Upon persistent offers, he served as the Minister of Foundations in the first and second governments of Damad Ferit Pasha. He was appointed as a member of the notables committee on September 15, 1919. His scientific rank was also increased to the position of professor of Suleymaniye Madrasa. He was sentenced to death in absentia by the Independence Court on the grounds that he served in the Istanbul governments during the War of Independence, and he was taken from his home in Fatih and taken to Ankara, where he was detained for forty days. He returned to Istanbul when he was found not guilty and released, probably because he was a member of the Committee of Union and Progress. Meanwhile, he translated the work Metalib and Mezâhib into Turkish. When the Grand National Assembly of Turkey decided to have a commentary prepared, the Presidency of Religious Affairs offered this job to Elmalılı. Elmalılı accepted this offer and started writing and managed to finish his work, which he called Hak Dini Kuran Dili, before his death. He died on 27 May 1942 due to heart failure, which he suffered from for a long time, and was buried in Erenköy Sahrayıcedid cemetery. Elmalılı prepared this work by quoting from reliable Ahl al-Sunnah source commentaries, sometimes criticizing the views he disagreed with, and gave information in accordance with the Hanafi sect in the ruling verses. Unless there is a mental necessity, he always takes the clear meanings of the verses as basis. For example; Forced interpretations were considered as distortions of the Quran, as in the example of Muhammad Abduhun, who claimed that the stones thrown by swifts might have carried measles or smallpox microbes while interpreting the Surah Elephant. He later published his work titled Hak Dini Kuran Dili (Istanbul 1935-1938), which was first published by the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Many editions have been made. Simplifications of the commentary have also been made. We added concise footnotes to the meaning, which we simplified within the framework of our own style, mostly from Elmalılı commentary and other tafsir and hadith sources. We added explanations that took up to one page, especially in the ruling verses and in some places we deemed necessary. Let us immediately point out that although Elmalılı is fluent in the Turkish language, he has preserved Arabic and Persian words and compounds to a significant extent in his translation and interpretation. Especially in the meaning, he contented himself with giving long verses in parts without combining them and preserving the order in the verse. The fragmentary meaning of the verses, which are largely uncombined, is included in the meaning. While we try to preserve this fragmentary interpretation method as much as possible, we have adopted a style that tries to give the message that today's people should receive from the whole verse in Turkish. We hope that the reader will notice the unity of style and the fluidity that occurs within a harmony in terms of Turkish. Below are a few examples on the subject: The original text from Elmalı: Before you, we sent only men to whom we gave revelation as messengers. Ask the people of dhikr if you do not know! We have sent down to you this remembrance through verses and books, so that you may explain to people what has been revealed to them, so that they may reflect. (Nahl, 16/43-44). Simplified text: Before you, We sent as messengers only men to whom We revealed. If you don't know, ask those who know! We sent them with clear evidence and books. We have sent down this Qur'an to you, so that you may explain to the people what has been revealed to them. Hopefully they will think and take advice! (Nahl, 16/43-44). Original text with Elmalı: Come on, he said; You have been granted your wish, O Moses! For the sake of my glory, we obliged you once again... Simplified text: -(Allah) said: O Moses! What you wanted was given to you. - I swear, we have been kind to you once again. (Ta-ha, 20/36-37). Original text from Elmalı: They said, we will never stop continuing with this, until Moses returns to us. (Ta-ha, 20/91). Simplified text:- They said: We will never stop worshiping this until Moses returns to us! (Ta-ha, 20/91). Original text with Elmalı: So be patient with what they say, and glorify the praise of your Lord before the sun rises and before it sets; Praise Him during the night hours and around you during the day so that you may attain contentment. (Taha, 20/130). Simplified text: Then be patient with what they say; Praise and glorify your Lord before the sun rises and sets. Praise Him during a part of the night and at the ends of the day, so that you may attain contentment. (Tâhâ, 20/130).
