Hello. One question here! I want to say the word for this:

I want to say: "We were drinking on a...."
I don't know how to call the outdoor seating of a bar. I don't know if it's better to use patio, terrace or another one. It seems there's a lot of names for it, but I don't know if they're a little bit different.

I'd like the BrE version this time. ;)
Thanks in advance, mates!

  • If the photographer is standing in or on the edge of a road I'd call that a pavement bar (drinking at a pavement bar). Otherwise bar terrace would do, but not patio.

It would almost certainly be called a "patio bar" in the U.S., or if there's an indoor bar attached to it, it might simply be called "the patio." "Terrace bar" or "bar terrace" would work as well.

Pavement has a different definition in AmE than in BR (it's yet another one of those minor differences - I learned it watching the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances), so that definitely would't work here. The image that the term "pavement bar" brings to my AmE-trained mind is kind of a funny one!
