ST. LOUIS – Local residents are shaken up after two area high school students were attacked in separate incidents over the span of a week.

A 14-year-old from Jennings Junior High School is dead and a 15-year-old Hazelwood East High School student remains in critical condition at the hospital.

Tuesday, 14-year-old Justin Brooks was stabbed to death off campus, leaving nearby neighbors in shock. The incident occurred in the 2400 block of Hord Ave., less than a mile away from the school.

It remains unclear what led to Brooks being stabbed, but St. Louis County Police say the act does not appear to be random.

“We noticed that when kids are unsupervised, they are more subject to get into altercations; that’s what we see, what I’ve seen, in my own neighborhood,” Eric Burnette, neighbor, said. “Once they leave school, that’s when the kids get into their altercations.”

Authorities attempted life-saving measures for Brooks. He was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Jennings Superintendent Paula Knight said a crisis team has been brought in to help students and staff.

“We are here standing outside greeting the children, we are greeting the families so that they can see our faces as they enter the building to let everyone know that we are keeping them safe while they are in our care,” she said.

Some Jennings residents say fights among the students are not unusual.

“As soon as they hit a few houses down, they start fighting,” resident Carol Culver said. “Everyday, it’s arguing; it’s loud.”

The stabbing happened just days after a fight between two teenage girls near Hazelwood East High School, which left one girl in critical condition. A 15-year-old girl has also been arrested.

Due to the graphic nature of the video, FOX 2 will not be showing the video.

The victim’s family created a GoFundMe page and provided an update, stating she remained in critical condition and the extent of brain damage will not be known until she wakes up.

According to her family, she is suffering from major brain bleeding after being left on the ground until emergency crews arrived on scene.

The girl was admitted to the hospital with a skull fracture and frontal lobe damage and has a long path to recovery.

Currently, there are no suspects in custody in connection with the Jennings stabbing.
