Name for a certain type of wine bar where wine produced by the owner is served at certain times. The name comes from the "bush" of green branches above the entrance gate, which indicates that the pub is open. In Germany, it is also known as a "Straußwirtschaft", "Besenwirtschaft" or "Heckenwirtschaft". In Austria, especially in the capital Vienna, these establishments are called Heuriger. The regulations for the operation of such wine taverns are said to have been issued by Emperor Charlemagne (742-814), but no original source is known. In any case, the regulations in the two countries are quite similar. Typical of such pubs is the mostly rustic interior, a selection of simple, often hearty dishes and, above all, the cosy, often informal atmosphere. See also under wine events and wine with food.
