South African Restaurant Peli Peli Will Shutter After More Than a Decade in Houston

Its locations will be taken over by Mozambik, which will also serve South African cuisine

After serving South African cuisine to Houstonians for more than a decade, Peli Peli will close both of its restaurants.

Both of the restaurant’s locations — one in The Woodlands, and the original at the Galleria — will close the doors for good on Sunday, September 5, according to a press release. Fortunately, though, there is good news for folks who have grown to appreciate the presence of South African cuisine in Houston. Both Peli Peli spaces will be taken over by Mozambik, a South African chain with more than 20 locations across its home country and Zambia.

The kitchen will be led by chef Macey Maples, a former Peli Peli chef. At Mozambik, diners can expect a menu of South African classics with Portuguese influence, including peri peri chicken, espetadas, (grilled, skewered meats) and bobotie. The restaurant will also serve South African wines, plus cocktails like the R&R, a traditional drink that blends rum and raspberry.

Ryan Stewart, former Peli Peli executive chef and a South Africa native, is leading Mozambik’s entry into the United States. He’s been an owner in the chain since 2008, and is currently working with his business partners to bring Mozambik to more locations in Texas and beyond in the coming months.

The first outpost of Mozambik will open in The Woodlands on September 10. An opening date has not yet been set for the Galleria location, stay tuned for more details on its arrival.
