Since 1967, the centerpiece of Santana has always been guitar god Carlos Santana, but other notable musicians also helped to define the band's unique sound. The incendiary afternoon performance at Woodstock included singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie and axe slinger Neal Schon, both of whom helped sculpt the smash singles “Evil Ways,” “Black Magic Woman,” and “Oye Coma Va” before leaving to form the band Journey in 1973.

Though band members would rotate throughout the next several decades, Santana’s unmistakable licks were always at the forefront of the band’s spicy infusion of psychedelic rock and Latin rhythms. And even after their regular streak of recording tapered in the early ’90s, the group remained a commanding presence on the live circuit.

In 1999 Santana’s partnered with guest vocalists Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews, Everlast, and others for Supernatural, which went on to sell over 30 million copies. Ever since, the leader’s been just as active as his heyday, even reuniting with the original line-up in 2016 for the highly anticipated Santana IV album.
