Ask Cora Hey Cora: I need more. More trends that are out out, OUT for 2020. We saw just a little hint of it last month, but I need MORE – Tell Me! Signed Pro Trend Dear Pro: Okay, I have researched and read and listened and watched: Here is what I have found: 1) OUT: Accent walls: Even though the experts say that accent walls are out – they clarify with this. “We want more! More color, not just one wall! It’s time to boldly enter the new decade by fearlessly experimenting with paint, washing ALL the walls in bold color – including millwork and trim!” All I can say to that is YIKES! I am not so sure about that, and please don’t for a moment think that anyone can paint! Because they can’t! In fact, I personally believe that some people should never be allowed to have a paint brush in their hands! So with that said, be careful! If you want to live by this crazy trend, make sure you do it right or pay someone to do it right! Bad paint jobs really show when it comes time to sell. 2) OUT: Minimalist Designs: I guess the whole “less is more” mantra is so 2019! Because tiny, sleek furniture is getting bumped into a tiny grey trash bin! According to this designer Justin Riordan, “Gone are the days of spaces with as little as possible. The darling of the design world is maximalism – solids mixed with stripes, mixed with plaids, mixed with polka dots!” Oh my! Justin may be scaring me a bit. Amato-Scotto says we are ready to take on more risks: “In true roaring ‘20s fashion, we are entering a new decade with visible boldness!” There really aren’t a lot of risks that I want to take in my living room, unless I am playing a board game! 3) OUT: Faux Natural Materials: Faux No! I guess “faking it” isn’t going to work anymore. According to Amato-Scotto, no more lookalike materials such as wood-look porcelain plank tile floors and faux stone. According to her it’s “Get Real People” all the way! 4) OUT: Rose Gold: Well that didn’t last long! Last year when I wrote the trends for 2019, rose gold was EVERYWHERE – and I do mean everywhere! But many designers are saying rose gold has reached is expiration date – in just 1 year. And that soft pinks and blushed hues are starting to see a decline and this “millennial trend” is no longer considered a fresh idea! The new colors? Magentas and corals! 5) OUT: Farmhouse style: Sorry Chip and Johanna Gaines, the pros are ready to put this one out to pasture! The experts think that retailers just jumped on this a sort of “cheapened” it a bit. One expert says “these put-together trends lack unique personality. Mass-produced furniture feels impersonal, and many are opting for more unique, one-ofa-kind pieces.” I can agree with that. I loved the barn door idea, but some furniture manufacturers just ran it into the ground! 6) OUT: The Era of Gray: Last year they pre-

Brought to you by dicted this too, but it’s still very popular. But according to what I am reading, warmer tones are coming to a new home near you! Light browns, toasty beiges, and creamy whites have begun to edge out the icier hues. Some designers are saying that more vibrant colors will take the place of standard neutrals, like Nave Blue and Emerald Green (oh scheesh, I don’t think we are Kansas anymore Toto!) 7) OUT: Neon Word Signs: Now I must be honest with you – I NEVER KNEW THIS WAS IN! Okay, so I can see this is like a beauty salon, tattoo parlor or some trendy night club, but in my living room, with all my rose gold and gray? LOL, no really, I guess it was a thing to have words spelled out in neon on your wall! Like Ou la la!! Or Just Do it! I am glad that’s out. Just the glow from that at night would make me think I was in a cheap hotel on Route 66 or in a diner that flashes “Eat at Joe’s”! 8) OUT: Bed in a Bag: Okay this seems strange. But here is what is being said; “The problem with these effortless bedding packages is that, well, they scream “no effort!” according to Amato-Scotto. She says “We are entering an age of authenticity, boldness, and personal expression, and a bedding set doesn’t allow for creative expression like custom bedding does!” You know what, get what you like! That’s my advice – if it comes in a bag, and you like it, then go for it my friends! 9) OUT: Open Floor Plans: What? Say it isn’t so that’s design blasphemy! I guess there are some people out there who have begun to tire of all the openness – and are craving a little more privacy. Really? Well, put on a bathrobe and sit in your bedroom if you want privacy – I want an open floor plan! Okay, now I am ranting – sorry. It says here: “The biggest revolt with millennials will be the desire for well-designed spaces for living, working, eating, and cooking.” Says Justin Riordan. All I can say to that is “hummm.” 10) OUT: Fast Furniture: Okay, I can understand this. It doesn’t move well, once you move it, it breaks apart. And it’s not exactly Heirloom Quality. I mean I can’t imagine any of my great grandkids will be saying “Oh, I so wish I had that pressed board shelving unit with the faux wood grain that great- gramma had her 300 pound TV on, it was a lovely piece!” And I can understand why people would want some more sustainable furnishings that will last the test of time. But I can see that simple easy to pack furniture will always be popular with young people on the move. Sometimes, I do wish I still had those cinder bocks and pine boards that my reel to reel was on! Okay, there you have it – the experts have spoken, now go do what you want – it’s your house! And remember if you don’t have a house – let’s talk – and get you one!
