Millions of people around the world can’t acquire knowledge or work because they cannot afford badly needed glasses. EinDollarBrille e.V. has found a sustainable solution to this global problem. The Erlangen-based organisation produces affordable and individually adapted eyeglasses, produced by local employees in developing countries, for around one US dollar in material costs per eyeglass. The sturdy models are sold at the price of two to three days’ wages in order to pay for staff and materials. In addition, the association trains local specialists in manufacturing and sales, and offers training to become an optician. The aim of this globally unique project is to establish basic independent optical care in developing countries.
