I arrived at my storage unit which is located on the second floor only to find the elevators where not working. I called the front office to see if there was another way up other than stairs. The office person said no that would be my only option. I asked why they had not sent out an email alerting tenants of the situation. I was told Managment decided against it...Hummm they don't have a problem sending out rent statements! As my frustration grew I asked why they didn't have someone attending the elevator area to offer help even if it was to offer a KIND gesture. Again it was a Managment decision not to offer goodwill. I asked if they were going to offer any type of compensation for the inconvenience and was told I already had a disconnected rate being on the second floor. That pushed me over the edge! I'm really not a confrontational person, I always look for the good but this just wasn't sounding right. It sounded as though they had a prepared answer for EVERYTHING! I asked to speak to someone who could answer my request and they gave a number to customer service at the corporate headquarters. I called, no answer, left a message to please call me so we can discuss the issues and now what for it...never had a call back!! NO SURPRISE!! Oh and not to mention we've had our storage unit for 6 years and another one there for two. Honestly I would have never posted this if they had just been better at customer service.

I had two issues with Costa Mesa Self Storage (I can't speak to how it compares to other storage places because this was my first):
(1) My price was constantly increasing. I rented my unit in February of 2020 and the price was $216 for the 18x10 unit with an additional protection plan ($12). I just ended my contract (February 2022) and I was paying $259 a month. That's almost a $50 increase per month in just two years. I can only imagine what it will be going for in another two years.
(2) Second, I was encouraged to auto-pay for my rent. So, I did which worked out fine until I was ready to move out. I read this in the email: "When vacating, we can pro-rate your rent to the 10th of the month if we receive notice of vacate on or before the 10th." I went in on February 2nd to cancel my contract (First day I could get off work) before the 10th. However, because I auto-paid, I ended up having to pay for the ENTIRE month because they DO NOT GIVE PARTIAL-MONTH REFUNDS. Why couldn't you have included that in the email if you're going to put such a provision? It would be an extra four words and would have saved me around $200 dollars: "NO PARTIAL-MONTH REFUNDS". Now, my unit is going to probably be double-paid for this month and I moved out on the 8th. It was just not a great way to treat a customer and I feel cheated.
Edit: I am not the business owner, so the cost of doing business should not be passed onto me. I'm sure costs increase, but that should be placed on contracts with NEW tenants, not existing tenants. Whether or not I received a "generous" term at the beginning of the contract is irrelevant to the price of the contract that I was paying. That was the offer and if you felt it was too generous, then it should not have been offered to me. It is also irrelevant for what the price of the current unit, other than to further prove my point that my unit will be "double-paid" (probably even tripled-paid for this month).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Dear Tara,
We understand your frustrations with the rental increase. These increases happen at all major storage facilities to account for changes in property costs, competition, etc. We looked into your account, and it appears you moved in at a very generous discount 2 years ago. Although you were paying $259/mo. by February 2022 as you referenced in your review, as of this response, the market rate for that size unit is $442 (and $397/mo. for new customers). This information is openly available on our website, and it is still a very competitive rate. As for your vacate, your account shows that you notified the office of your scheduled 2/7 move-out on 2/2. If our team was notified before the beginning of the month, they could have cancelled your autopay before February’s billing cycle. Tenants also have the ability to manage their payment info online and cancel autopay as needed. Unfortunately, we do not provide partial month refunds as outlined in the Rules & Regulations portion of your lease agreement. We do apologize if this policy was not covered with you thoroughly at the time of your move in.
Regards,

I was so angry this company continually raises their prices. You have to constantly call to ask why the steep price adjustment. Does not matter if you have always paid on time and been a long term tenant.
My price adjustment was $40 more a month. Don't waste your time here they will offer you a good move in then constantly raise their prices.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Dear Kris,
We understand your concerns about the cost of your storage. Rate changes occur at all major storage facilities to account for increasing operating expenses and competition, and we do our best to keep in-line with our competitors. We believe that we've located your account under this name, and if we are correct, your new rate is still well below the standard rate. You can check our website to see what your current size is being offered at for new customers, and you will discover that even after the rate change, you are still paying less. We hope that you understand our reasoning and we thank you for your time.
Regards,

Place is very clean. The on-site staff has always been great!
However, we just got our SECOND price increase in a 12 month period. That's been disappointing.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Marissa,
We apologize for your frustration with the rental increases and we hate to hear that you're disappointed. Unfortunately, just like the general cost of living increases each year, so do operating costs for our business. These rate changes are an answer to offsetting these costs. Most of our competitors also practice rate increases from time to time, and it is standard for the industry.
We deeply value your feedback, and we are happy to hear that you're otherwise pleased with our facilities and our service. Please feel free to contact the contact the Costa Mesa office at 714-966-9901 should you like to discuss your concerns in detail.
Kind Regards,

Absolutely horrible experience. I reserved a 10×15 unit on line yesterday early afternoon and drove 1 hour and 25 minutes to get to storage facility at 5:25pm just to be told that they don't have the unit and they can't find my reservation. I had print out from computer that clearly showed a 10×15 reserved under my name. This is the most unorganized and miss managed storage facility that I have ever seen and I had used public storage, extraspace storage and number of independent storages and never seen a guaranteed reservation not be honored. Stay a way from this facility at all costs.. use public storage or extra space storage and you will be 100 times happier.

Dear Amir,
We apologize for any confusion and inconvenience. We searched our records for an online rental/reservation under this name or any reservations that occurred on January 6th at Costa Mesa Self Storage, and we were unable to find a matching record. Please let us know if your transaction was completed under a different name. Errors such as the one you describe in your review are rare, and it likely has something to do with the service we use to enable online rental activities. This has been reported to our service provider to investigate further and hopefully prevent in the future. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

No I had a unit there and I don't see your point. However you put it, I had to pay double one month of rent and only able to use it half that month. Then you're free to rent it out for the rest of the time I had paid for. No matter how you splice it, you're the one making out while shafting the customer. If missing the deadline you already have to pay for the extra time you're not going to be using it giving you enough rent to cover the required set time per giving notice. So to tack on fees on top of that, makes no sense and is unnecessarily gouging. Then if wanting to go back and use the locker (which is already paid for up til that needed notice time) you charge Another fee.

Steven,
We were unable to find you in our database. Due to the content of your review, we believe you may be a relative of recent tenant at Costa Mesa Self Storage. Per our vacate policy, the lock must be removed by the tenant in order to move the unit out of the system. If a lock remains on the unit, it is considered occupied and will continue to accrue rent and other fees until removed. Once the manager had discovered that the lock was removed, she promptly vacated that unit from the system. If you'd like to further discuss this policy, please reach us at 714-966-9901.
Regards
ManagementFeb 11, 2020Previous reviewIf you're looking to rent here only read reviews of people who have left! That's when they get you. They were notified and I was moved out before the half of the month. They wanted another day warning so They stacked up A TON of useless made up FEES and rented my unit out and received double the rent off it. They don't care about you, greedy, selfish, unkind policies.

I don't usually yelp but this deserves a shout out. I have rented many storage units in my life and I have to say I had the best experience here! The woman working the counter was extremely friendly and easy to work with, the storage unit is very clean, and I was in and out with a very good price within just a few minutes. She took me to my unit, was able to get me an amazing rate, and they even have a box truck that you can use if you are moving! Five stars all the way. Keep up the good work!

Hi Taylor,
You may have worked with our Property Manager at Costa Mesa SS (and resident storage expert), Linzy. We always aim to provide our customers with a convenient and pleasant move-in experience, and we're pleased to hear that Linzy was able to deliver on that front. Thanks for taking the time to Yelp us!

This has been the WORST place for storage. Constantly raising the fees WITHOUT notification! The management does NOT communicate or call their customers back! Even the move out was a complete joke making us pay ANOTHER raised amount for the month that we DID NOT agree to. This place is a rip off! Also the clients in the units are super sketchy and I never felt safe while in or around their property. Do your homework and do NOT rent here.

Dear Aimee,
All of our customers are provided with advance notice of any changes in their monthly rent. It is the customer's responsibility to update their contact information at the office in order to receive up-to-date information should we need to send any notices to you. Our District Manager did contact you promptly and extended the prorated rent and waived the late fee in order to save you the cost of paying a full month of rent. It was our understanding that we reached an agreement and you were satisfied with the end result, however, it appears that is not the case. Feel free to direct any additional concerns to the Property Manager at Costa Mesa Self Storage.
Thank you for your understanding,
