I have to laugh at the one-star review's very premise. You don't buy a Martin Greenfield suit because it LASTS longer any more than you buy a Ferrari because it fits in your parking space. You buy them because they are awesome, coveted, and you appreciate the finest.

Such are MG suits. I'm probaby closing in on my tenth at this point. Have had very few complaints, despite many years as a customer, and never one they didn't make right. Have had plenty of compliments though. And, in terms of how long they last - always longer than I can restrain my eagerness to get a new one.

In fact, my only hesitancy in giving 5-stars is that the incremental business might cut into my turn around time. There is a reason why Martin is a legend. And I don't throw that word around.

I bought a suit here once. A customized suit like they promote. I was told it should last me for 10 years. In actuality it lasted 6-7 years. That is in fact about how long other suits have lasted for me, but every suit I had bought before that one had cost me less than half the price. The more expensive suit is reasonably expected to last longer.

They are also VERY highly priced compared to other custom suit makers, of which there are now quite a few more than there used to be. MGC has very much "gone Hollywood" in the last decade or so, providing suits for major movies, tv shows, and Broadway productions. It seems this has driven the hubris there sky high! Their one-time salt-of-the-earth ethos is totally gone.

If you decide you do want to invest in a customized suit--and remember an off-the-rack suit tailored to personal specifications can be virtually as good for less money--I would urge you to go elsewhere.

Regarding reviewer Mark G., who is targeting me: He shows every sign of having been born on 3rd base and acting like he hit a triple! It is actually apropos that someone like that would be a devoted customer: the current proprietors of the place fit that description as well!

Based on Mr. G's coarse, arrogant tone, I expect he works on Wall Street. If he does, then he indeed does have an excellent reason to purchase a customized suit, not just a tailored-to-spec suit. There are essentially two groups of people to whom this is an issue: the aforementioned "Streeters," and people who work in the men's garment industry. If you have a personal or professional interest in impressing people among these groups and being in their good favor, it is definitely worth your while to make the additional investment. Whether it is worth it to buy from MGC is another question. They are certainly among the most expensive clothiers, but whether they are still among the best is much less clear, several years into the founder's retirement.

There are surely exceptions, but beyond people in those two professions, you are extremely unlikely to be scrutinized to determine if your suit is customized or not. People care exceedingly little about men's clothes in our society--It's a plain truth, which is why the customized men's suit is an expense that is best carefully considered before undertaking.

      Updated review

UPDATE: After a poor experience, Tod from Martin Greenfield reached out to resolve. He listened to why I was upset by the suit and offered to cut me a new jacket. They were able to recut my jacket and fix the crooked part and help deliver it to my office. I appreciate the effort in their resolution / believe the jacket was finally cut to the quality that everyone speaks about when it comes to Martin Greenfield. I truly wish the business the best of luck.

DO NOT GO HERE. I have NO idea where they got their credibility from because they are scammers and the worst tailors I have ever dealt with. I came here after getting stellar reviews from friends and I regret every dollar I spent here. I bought 2 suits from here for my wedding and not only did they mess up my suit jacket, they continued to pretend they were fixing it when they weren't. I noticed the front edge of my jacket was crooked and I told them about it. They said they could fix it no problem. When I went to pick it up, it looked exactly the same. I asked them to fix it again and their pattern maker said the jacket was cut wrong and he would fix it himself. At this point we are a week away from my wedding because they kept saying they would fix it when they didn't. When I came to pick it up the day before my wedding, they told me they couldn't fix it in time and that after my wedding I could bring it back to get it fixed. I brought it back after my wedding and gave them 3 weeks to fix it. What do you know, AGAIN, they give me the SAME jacket, completely untouched and STILL CROOKED. I had a friend who is a pattern maker look at this jacket and the only way to fix it is to RECUT THE SUIT. Which Martin Greenfield is clearly too cheap to fix his own mistSince then, I have called 3 times which has led me to their front desk person who keeps taking my number down and saying someone will call me. No one calls me back. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT AN ACTUAL CUSTOM SUIT. Go to Enzo Customs in midtown if you're looking for solid guys who won't mess up your suit and then keep tricking you by telling you they'll fix it when they won't. PLEASE SEE PICTURES FOR THE WORST SUIT YOU CAN EVER IMAGINE.

Crooked front edge - notice it curves inward when it should have been curving in a smooth line down

The expertise, the product, and everything about this business goes beyond superb in my opinion. I researched tailors to have some suits and an overcoat made, and this company jumped out having had customers such as President Obama and President Clinton so I explored some more. I couldn't be happier. Everything they did turned out better than I could have hoped. There are generations of experience involved in this company, and they listen carefully and then create precisely what you have in mind. All very old-school, and just so worth it. I could go on and on but I'm not sure how much room yelp would give me.

The team at Martin Greenfield designed a custom tuxedo and formal shirt to my husband's specifications. They were open-minded, helpful, and provided good advice throughout. They also arranged for multiple fittings and alterations (at no extra cost), working with our schedule since we were coming in from Connecticut. Mr. Greenfield was present at almost every occasion, and he and his team were fantastic throughout. Worth every penny.

It is wonderful in this day of the online tech-driven version of customization to find some people still devoted to old world craftsmanship. With beautiful fabrics and years of experience, a kind, down to earth staff helped me create a perfectly tailored suit that made "dress clothes" more comfortable and flattering than I could have hoped. Terrific experience!
