I was excited to visit NY Hearing Center because the many 5 star reviews. I am not sure why my experience was different, but it was quite lackluster. I would describe the general air of the office as disinterested, dismissive, and distracted.
First of all, I reached out in June seeking an appointment, and did not hear back. I emailed and called a handful of times. No luck. Then, finally in mid-August they replied - almost two months later! Fortunately I was still interested and gave them the benefit of the doubt that they were busy. Then they booked me for an appointment yet another month away - and when that day finally came I received a text reminder that it was set for the wrong location (in Brooklyn, and I was seeking to visit the location in Manhattan). Fortunately they were able to squeeze me in at Manhattan without a big deal, but I was confused by this since I originally spoke to the Manhattan office.
I told them I was interested in custom-fitted ear plugs as well as a hearing test. The test went fine, no complaints there. Dr. Feng seemed distracted by the end and totally forgot that I originally came to them for the custom-fitted plugs, so I had to remind her. I also asked questions regarding my concerns for tinnitus and for an audiologist, she had surprisingly very little to say on the subject. She offered no illumination or comfort. I've honestly received a lot more information from Dr. Google. I asked if I should see an ENT regarding an occasional popping sounds in my ear as well as muffled hearing - and she did not know, or didn't really care to offer an answer. I'd say her response was basically a shrug. For a specialist in the matter of hearing, I found this really surprising that she couldn't at least tell me anything about tinnitus or popping in my ear.
I'm grateful I got my ear plugs, but I'm sad to say my experience wasn't as glowing as others report here. I will not be back. In the future I'm seeking an audiologist who cares to take the time to explain hearing concerns to me, since that's literally part of the job.
Lastly, the office itself felt a bit dirty and the water cooler was empty on both occasions. Small details but to me these kind of things speak volumes about patient care, especially to someone like me paying out of pocket.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bill W.New York, NY05Apr 20, 2023
Dr. Kathy Feng and her team are amazing. At my first visit Dr. Kathy performed a very comprehensive hearing test and assisted me in choosing the best devices for my situation.
After the devices arrived at her office I went in for my second visit and she made sure everything was set up correctly, helped me with the phone app and walked me through all the options. She even scheduled a follow up appointment to make sure everything is working well for me.
I have been to other Audiology practices in the past and none were as professional and friendly at Dr. Kathy Feng and her entire team at New York Hearing Center!
I highly recommend Dr. Kathy Feng and New York Hearing Center!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sherman J.Manhattan, NY02Mar 17, 2023

Wonderful! After audiologists in two different practices insisted my hearing aids and the programming was fine and I knew I wasn't hearing properly for many months - NY Hearing Center helped me. Got my malfunctioning hearing aids replaced, programmed my backups in the meantime - better than they have been in probably years - and then updated the programming on the new ones. Stress free, patient, and kind - and reasonably priced to boot. Thank you, my new audiologists - you're great!

This place is excellent. The receptionist worked hard to find a good slot for me in a busy time, the office was beautiful and clean and pleasant, and the doctor who saw me was so friendly and professional. No complaints. It was a great time.

I found the New York Hearing Center 15 years ago and have been using their service since. Dr Feng is the consummate professional. Dedicates ample time to the assessment and hearing test and to the adjustment of my hearing aids whenever that has been necessary. The administrative staff is very personable and so responsive by phone. Even though we're from out of state we return to the center.

My wife and I first went to see Dr. Kathy Feng and her great team in 2016. We've been steady clients ever since with new upgraded hearing aids a couple years ago. All very friendly, competent and exceptional value for a good price.
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 27, 2016Previous reviewA very good friend my age referred me to Dr. Kathy Feng at NY Hearing Center about a year after he got his own hearing aids from her. I have to say that Mott Street in Chinatown is where I go for great Chinese food, not exactly where I'd expect to find a great audiologist and very lovely person to fit me with hearing aids. These devices are a substantial investment, even if one has insurance helping. I'm a media producer. I'd been putting off the inevitable need for aids. But I decided not to wait any longer after reading a recent article in the NY Times talking about the isolation and depression that can come from even moderate hearing loss. Enough of saying, "What? What did you say?" at dinners and even at home.
Cut to Mott Street. I've been to China - Beijing, Hong Kong. I love the bustle and aromas of Chinatown and it's hutong-like streets. Finding NY Hearing Center's entrance amidst the heads of cabbage, ginger roots and Hello Kitty dolls was a journey of its own.
Up slow elevator. Around a couple corners to the NYHC office. Chatted with the very pleasant and attentive receptionist until my turn came. If you've been to audiologists before, you know the questioning and soundproof booth testing drill.
Here's where my experience became different from all others in the past. First, Kathy - Dr. Feng - and I conversed like real people. Her cute but very energetic little boy came bouncing in from school for a moment. We chatted. Then it was time for ear business. Look, not all audiologists come across as used car salespeople trying to sell you the most expensive item on the lot no matter what your needs or desires. What I found in Kathy was the exact opposite. When we looked at my levels and types of hearing loss, yes, she suggested a very well-respected brand's upper mid-level model. But she explained carefully what its features could do for me. And when I asked about a somewhat less price model, she immediately told me about it, made the comparison and fully agreed that it was a much better bang for my buck. Thanks, Kathy, for your integrity.
As my very good luck would have it, she happened to have the exact model I needed in stock that day. So instead of having to wait a week or two for delivery of my aids, I was able to immediately walk out onto those colorful and suddenly noisy streets. I heard conversations behind me better than I'd previously been hearing in front of me. Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and, oh yeah, English. Cool!
Someone who knew I'd just got aids warned me that it would take some time to adjust. Yes, right. Like 0.1 seconds. Oh, happy day.
After a couple weeks I went back for my standard re-exam. By then I'd realized that I was hearing too much from behind and he sides and not enough in front, especially in places like noisy restaurants. First we caught up on personal stuff for a moment (Kathy, a foodie, had recommended a couple nice places in the West Village). Kathy asked how my hearing was and for any questions or problems. Quickly, after I'd explained my directional hearing perception, she placed a bluetooth programming device around my neck, plucked a little at her computer and shifted the balance of the two microphones in each ear more toward the front.
Now it's all perfect. I carry spare batteries in my wallet, look forward to waring these aids so invisible that I have to tell people they're in. But folks have also noticed that I'm more engaged in conversations than I'd been for years.
My wife was so impressed and envious that, as she had done for me (she was tired of me mistaking "Happy Birthday" for "Go jump in a lake" - and vice versa), I decided to send her to Kathy for her Christmas present of new ears.
And her opinion of Dr. Kathy Feng exactly matches mine.
After you've had your ears fixed by Kathy, go have some good Chinese food through almost every door and maybe some exotic ice cream on Bayard Street. And enjoy the ambient sounds and lively chatter - even if you don't speak Mandarin.
Thanks, Kathy. And that good friend who referred ME to her. - J. R.New York, NY120Jun 30, 2018
A wonderful experience!
I purchased custom-molded musicians' earplugs from here a few weeks ago. Dr. Feng explained details of the molding process very clearly, and carefully applied and removed the impression foam.
Once the plugs came in, she patiently taught me how to insert, remove, and clean the plugs, which work extremely well - great clarity and superb protection for practice and performing.
I'm very happy that I went through with this, and am glad to have done so through New York Hearing Center!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
