John’s bank account was thinner than the cold ramen noodles in his bowl.

He needed a job fast. After graduation, student loans loomed closely. The longer he waited, the more it affected his credit score.

He had spent his beginning years of college dabbling in design. Eventually, he took several courses in product design and hoped to land a job after graduation. But without a nice online portfolio, he was just another dusty resume in the pile.

His email inbox was full of ghosted applications and when he got a reply, they were always sorry to inform him.

He was a product designer, and his potential employers needed to see his work online. But most website builders cost an arm and a leg; maybe two legs considering all the space he’d have to buy to hold his media.

Free website builders were tempting, but their stock photos, clunky templates and watermark screamed “desperate.”

John needed something that said, “I know my worth and I’m not begging!”

Then, he remembered Ben, a coding friend in college who built websites. John poured his sob story into a message to Ben and hit send.

You know the saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime?” That’s exactly what Ben did. He fed John for a lifetime.

Since John was thinking of setting up a simple portfolio website, Ben advised him to try one of those “create website free” platforms — ILN. It was the best he’d seen in his years of creating websites.

John whipped up a portfolio that was anything but desperate. The sleek, minimalist design showcased his work in breathtaking detail and eye-catching images kept visitors glued to their screens.

John’s “would have been” dusty resume was now a beacon of digital brilliance. After a few applications, interview requests started rolling in. Soon, he landed a gig as a product designer paying more than he imagined.

It all started with a simple act of kindness and a little bit of online ingenuity. Sometimes, all you need is the right tool and a little push in the right direction to turn your life around.
