Our story

Nielsen restaurant is located in the heart of Egilsstaðir, East Iceland. The house, which is the oldest house in town, was built in 1944 by a danish man named Oswald Nielsen hence the name of the restaurant.

The owners of Nielsen restaurant are Sólveig and Kári. Sólveig was born and raised in Egilsstaðir. Kári is a renowned chef in Iceland who before moving to Egilsstaðir worked as a head chef at Dill restaurant in Reykjavík, the first restaurant in Iceland to receive a Michelin star.

But now they have moved away from the hustle and bustle of the city to the country side where they are striving to offer every guest an authentic Icelandic culinary experience.

At Nielsen you can either sit inside or when the weather permits on the beautiful tree surrounded patio. The main focus of the constantly evolving menu at Nielsen will be local and seasonal ingredients taken at the peak of their flavours, preserved or used fresh depending on availability.

Kári and Sólveig are both very passionate about cooking and cuisine and are most happy when sharing a good meal and drink with family and friends. At Nielsen restaurant they try and share this passion with all of their guests.

One of the things that made Kári and Sólveig want to move to Egilsstaðir, besides everything listed above, was the easy access to produce of the highest quality. Fresh fish, organic greens, variety of game and even locally grown wasabi! Their menu evolves around the availability and seasonality of these local products and changes according to the seasons…so don‘t be surprised if the menu has completely changed from the last time you dined at Nielsen.

Great Place

I got the fish of the day. It was firm and very good and the sides fitted perfectly. Had the Skyr desert and it is a flavour rollercoaster sweat and sour like it very much. The service is very friendly and quick. Will definitely recommend this restaurant and I will be here again.

Best lunch in Iceland

Went for lunch and had an amazing beef stew with mashed potatoes and fresh green salad. Excellent ice cream and salt caramel chocolate for dessert. Going for lunch is very budget-friendly, the most delicious lunch in Iceland for a great price. Also, excellent coffee which is a bit hard to get in Egilsstaðir.

Amazing!

It was amazing! A must visit. We had the four courses, all plates were cleared- I’d have the meal again if I could.

Iceland has so many great restaurants but this was a surprise. We hadn’t expected such fine dining food that was tasty, filling and in such a relaxed environment. It was the best meal we’d had in the country. If we’d stayed another day, we’d have gone back again.

Excellent dinner – nice setting

The restaurant is located in a very nice old house, with a small, one-page menu (3 starters, main courses and deserts each). The first night we had a three-course menu with the wild salmon as a starter and lamb for the main course and ice cream chocolate/caramel dessert. Both the Spanish and French red wine by the glass were also very good. We returned the next evening having the same starter and the fish of the day, a nicely prepared cod.
