In 2012, she received her Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech Language Hearing Association. Working in long term care and assisted living for 5 years with a range of medical complexity from TIA with young adults, strokes affecting individuals in a variety of areas, cognitive impairment including dementia and Alzheimer’s. Beginning in 2015, a transition occurred to Early Intervention with a focus on pediatric language development, feeding/swallowing issues, and the medically fragile including neurological complexities, rare genetic disorders, children with food allergies, voice disorders, fluency, mental impairment and ASD. Amy holds a strong interest in utilization of sign language with children who experience a language barrier including those who are hard of hearing, deaf, or nonverbal. Additional qualifications include VitalStim Therapy Certification in 2013, Naturalistic Intervention with Young Children 2017, Dysphagia for the Medically Complex Infant, Toddler and Child 2018, Feeding Tubes Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing 2018, Feeding Matters 2020, Implementation of Complexity Approach 2021. Growing up across the great state of North Carolina, Amy is proud to call Waynesville her home. When she is not working she enjoys being outside gardening, and you can find her playing with her 5 children on her homestead.

Marcy Maksail,

M.A., CCC-SLP,

Speech Language Pathologist

Marcy received her M.A. in Communication Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 2002, her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language Hearing Association in 2003, New York State teacher certification for K-6 permanent licensure 2003, and her Neonatal Oral Motor Assessment Scale (NOMAS) certification in 2010, North Carolina Infant Toddler certification in 2011, and NC Lactation Educator certification in 2019. In addition to her qualifications, Marcy has two decades of clinical experience as a speech language pathologist, which ranges from acute care hospital settings serving both inpatient and outpatient populations, as well as early intervention and preschool. Her particular areas of interest are: early language development, pediatric feeding and swallowing, trachs, passy muir valves, voice, fluency and acid reflux in all populations including children who have unique medical complications and/or genetic differences. Marcy has worked in a pediatric neurologically based outpatient clinic in Raleigh for several years before moving to western North Carolina, and enjoys the complexities of these young children’s systems and the effect on their feeding, swallowing, and language development.

Additionally, Marcy holds a particular interest in working with children who are dual language learners and credits her early cross-cultural experiences as an exchange student and second language learner with providing insight into the distinctive challenges of this population. Marcy speaks Dutch as a second language, as well as French/English mix at home that she affectionately refers to as Franglais. Marcy is originally from the Adirondack region of New York State near the border to Quebec, Canada. She moved to North Carolina in 2007 and calls the mountains of Western North Carolina home.

Karolanne received her B.S. (2009) and M.S. (2011) in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Western Carolina University. She is also ASHA Certified and holds an NC License as a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist. Karolanne is originally from Asheboro, NC… “where the zoo is.” After graduating then moving to the triangle of NC for 10+ years… she finally came back to WNC (Waynesville area) in 2022. She tells people all the time, “These hills have always been my home away from home!” Karolanne has over a decade of experience with early intervention (specifically ages 18 months – 5 years) and recently covered preschool and elementary school positions for extended medical leave for a few speech therapists. She loves therapy in the natural environment and enjoys working with children and caregivers during their journey to more effective communication, whether it is: expressive and/or receptive language, articulation, social skills, and/or fluency. When she’s not working with children, she is likely at a skilled nursing facility, as her other passion is working with the adult population. Memory care and cognitive therapy as well as adult dysphagia and language intervention are of great interest. She is a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association – participates in the Walk to

End Alzheimer’s, The Longest Day, and is also ambassador for NC’s District 11 (dealing with the policy side of things). If there is any other spare time, she can be found at craft shows, down by (or in) the river, roaming these beautiful hills, or sitting on the back deck!

Speech Language Therapy

Covering Speech, Language, and Swallowing

Utilizing natural play and everyday activities we focus on helping children communicate their needs, wants, passions and everything else about life!

Treating a variety of difficulties including:

Articulation Disorders:

A child has trouble producing sounds or words,

speech sounds may be dropped, added, distorted or substituted.

Phonological Processes:

A child makes predictable Patterns of sound errors. It is common for developing

children to use them to simplify speech as they learn to talk. however, when they continue to use it past a certain age, it may be a disorder.

Receptive Language Disorder:

A child has trouble understanding language that they hear and read. Individuals who struggle with the meaning of language may respond in ways that do not make sense. Children are frequently labeled as 'stubborn', 'don't listen', or followers of the group,

Expressing Language Disorder:

A child has trouble Communicating with Others, such as

expressing their thoughts and feelings, reduced vocabulary, or

difficulty saying complex sentences. This frequently results in increased frustration, which can lead to hitting, biting, tantrums. and meltdowns.

Pragmatic Disorder

This is the social skills of language and Use of the Unspoken rules of language. this includes eye contact, conversational turn taking, engaging in turn taking, understanding how to use communication (verbal and non-verbal) to get needs and wants met across social situations. These kids often play alone or 'ignore' others, push

their way through others to get what they want, and have trouble

understanding the meaning of what others are saying.

Hearing Impairment

Children with hearing loss may or may not hear your voice clearly.

they continue to struggle to understand words and sounds. Most hearing impaired individuals have greater difficulty understanding speech when there is

background noise. children with hearing loss do not learn language as fast as

those with normal hearing. These Children first learn concrete words

but have trouble with abstract words.

Voice Disorders

A voice disorder is a change in how the child's voice sounds or

if the quality of a person's voice is noticeably different. This can

include hoarse or harsh voice, very high or low pitch, too loud

or soft, and nasal sound. voice problems can originate from vocal nodules/polyps,

vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal tumors, acid reflux, papilloma's, neurologic disease, vascular malformations, trauma, and other problems.

Stuttering

Young children may stutter when their speech and language abilities

are not developed enough to keep up with what they want to say.

Stuttering is when the normal flow of speech is disrupted . A child may repeat

or prolong sounds, syllables, or words. this is different from repeating words when learning to speak. stuttering may make it difficult for a child to communicate

with others. Types of stuttering include developmental stuttering (most common, between ages 2-5), neurogenic stuttering (due to stroke or brain injury), and

psychogenic stuttering (emotional trauma or along with problem

thinking or reasoning).
