Sign Language Interpreter – Juru Bahasa Bahasa Isyarat

Sign language or bahasa isyarat is a different kind of language.

In wikipedia:

Sign languages (also known as signed languages) are languages that use the visual-manual modality to convey meaning. Sign languages are expressed through manual articulations in combination with non-manual elements. Sign languages are full-fledged natural languages with their own grammar and lexicon.

This can be seen in YouTube.

In the Indonesian version this is:
Bahasa Isyarat adalah bahasa yang mengutamakan komunikasi manual, bahasa tubuh, dan gerak bibir, bukannya suara, untuk berkomunikasi. Orang tuli adalah kelompok utama yang menggunakan bahasa ini, biasanya dengan mengkombinasikan bentuk tangan, orientasi dan gerak tangan, lengan, dan tubuh, serta ekspresi wajah untuk mengungkapkan pikiran mereka.

Indonesian Police Initiative

In a recent announcement, the Indonesian National Police spokesman Insp. Gen Argo Yuwono said that the Indonesian police will provide sign language interpreters during police conferences to assist the disable and bridge the communication barriers.

In the US, the famous NYC sign language has been in the news quite often.

Membership to an association (Association of Indonesian Translators) better known as HPI

For translators or interpreters like myself, in the language pair English to Indonesian, belonging to an association is an important part of our integrity as professionals in the language services industry.

So if we look over to the American Translators Association (ATA) website, the Association for interpreters and translator in the US, we can see that it was founded:

“to advance the translation and interpreting professions and foster the professional development of individual translators and interpreters. Its over 10,000 members in more than 103 countries include translators, interpreters, teachers, project managers, web and software developers, language company owners, hospitals, universities, and government agencies.“

As for the Association of Indonesian Translators or Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia it was founded to help members acquire work, which later shifted to enhance the quality of translators and interpreters as we can see from this, in the About section:

2020 – 2021

Korean Drama: Start-Up – Exquisite

Damn. In a good sense. Drakor: Korean Drama.

It’s so cool.

I’ve been pushed or rather persuaded to see/watch “Start-Up” on a streaming service by my wife and her nieces, (I am a subscriber to two services: Netflix and Disney HotStar) even my brother-in-law (who prefers western shows) is in the process of watching.

And with that trigger, before, I had been inclined to see it, but, nevertheless, I am watching it. Two days straight. Some would say that this binge watch is not good, but who’s complaining.

Anyway, as translator and interpreter in the language pair English to Indonesian, I’ve been intrigued with shows on this streaming services that has a non-English source as a drive to watch more of these shows, I grew up seeing and watching Hollywood and western ones. But non-English movies now are my choice. But of course, I am not ditching the English ones.

I’m on my 11th episode on this series now, and it has sparked me to write this article. I will also point out several reason why I am writing this:

One, there’s this scene, where there is translation, I mean interpreters’ booth: shown here from my screenshot (hope Netflix don’t mind, if they do please let me know).

Irama penerjemah lepas (freelance translator) – bekerja dari rumah atau work from home (WFH)

Seorang teman lama berkata bahwa ia tak tahan bekerja dari rumah.

Apa itu gerangan bekerja dari rumah?

‘Working from home’ (WFH) adalah bekerja mendapatkan rezeki untuk mencukupi kebutuhan sehari-hari dan memberikan jasa kepada orang lain dari kediaman kita. Kok bisa? Ya bisa.

Tren ini cukup mencuri hati karena tidak perlu ikut “rat race” dari bangun pagi-pagi, siap-siap menuju kantor di lain tempat yang cukup jauh, serta berjam-jam di jalan baik di kendaraan umum atau pun di kendaraan pribadi.

Begitulah sekilas apa itu bekerja dari rumah.

Irama dari bekerja dari rumah adalah:

bangun pagi dan melakukan aktivitas rutin, mendekati komputer, menyalakan komputer, sarapan pagi, buka email, balas email, buka Facebook, komentar di Facebook, buka Google Reader, baca-baca artikel menyangkut industri terjemahan, mandi, minum kopi sambil makan snack ringan, mulai bekerja mengerjakan pesanan hingga makan siang, istirahat, mulai kembali bekerja sambil buka-buka rujukan via internet, istirahat “snack jam tiga”, berhenti bekerja ketika kuota telah dicapai, kembali membuka email dan Facebook, menghentikan diri, bercengkerama dengan keluarga, makan malam, buka internet kembali (jika ada email penting) nonton TV, istirahat.

Kira-kira begitulah irama kerja.

Tentu ada saatnya kita harus bertemu.

Ini tulisan sekarang agak relevan. Jadi saya posting.

Globalization and Localization and Translation and Holidays :)

Going global or globalization (the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale) in localization (the process of making something local in character or restricting it to a particular place) requires suppliers (language providers i.e. translators) to be ready 24/7 (always awake ready to provide service) since the world never sleeps, so says some people.

Unfortunately for suppliers we tend to have to work only in our local time to cater the global time i.e. to be ready 24/7, we can say we can’t do that just yet, or we know our limitations. We need rest, sleep and even time for other things such as time with our families and even for holidays and vacation.

To best communicate this, as suppliers there’s always scheduling (providing in advance our availability). We provide our calendar of availability to show when we are available.

And of course, there’s an old fashioned but effective way, we give our clients our time schedule per quarterly or even the whole year.

Sounds easy right, not so.

For some of our colleagues a steady work means that some would be willing to be on standby 24/7. And even go to lengths to stay up late in the local time and ready at the client’s local time (may entail a different time zones).

Sometimes my colleagues are ready to be a bat, a night owl and other creatures alike that can stay up late (in their respective time zones).

I just surrender to these habits.

I am an early riser and I need time for myself too.

So, thank you clients for understanding my needs too.

Kartu anggota Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia

Sebagai profesional yang bergerak di bidang kebahasaan, tepatnya sebagai Penerjemah Indonesia pasangan bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia, akan sangat baik jika kita tidak sendirian.

Cari jasa penerjemah via Google Search

Di era modern yang semua serba internet, mudah melakukan pencarian. Misalnya kita ingin cari jasa penerjemah. Tinggal cari di Google Search, dan mesin pencari ini akan menelusuri pencarian penerjemah yang dicari.

Kata kunci yang kita perlukan mungkin seperti ini:

“Cari jasa penerjemah” lalu kata-kata tersebut dimasukkan ke dalam Google Search, lalu mesin pencari ini akan memudahkan Anda untuk menemukan jasa penerjemah yang diinginkan.

Atau ada kata lain misalnya: “Cari penterjemah bahasa inggris”. Atau kata lain yang ada kata-kata yang berhubungan dengan penerjemahan bahasa inggris, misalnya selain penterjemah bahasa inggris, bisa juga digunakan penerjemah bahasa inggris.

Yang penting buat kita adalah mencari dengan kata-kata yang ada dalam benak kita.

Selfie

According to urbandictionary.com ‘selfie’ is defined as:

“A picture taken of yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook, Myspace or any other sort of social networking website. You can usually see the person’s arm holding out the camera in which case you can clearly tell that this person does not have any friends to take pictures of them so they resort to Myspace to find internet friends and post pictures of themselves, taken by themselves. A selfie is usually accompanied by a kissy face or the individual looking in a direction that is not towards the camera. ”

The topic selfie had a trending topic in the Internet world especially in Indonesia.

Well, I feel that for some people, when they’re taking selfies at least now, they will have a sense of what ‘selfie’ really means now.

Keputusan: memilih yang tepat, akurat, pas, cocok, tidak melenceng dan sesuai target

Setiap manusia di suatu saat dihadapkan oleh pilihan dan ketika waktu itu tiba, produk akhir proses memilih adalah sebuah keputusan tidak terkecuali seorang penerjemah dalam hal ini tentu sebagai penerjemah Indonesia (dengan pasangan bahasa Indonesia Inggris), saya pun dihadapkan oleh sebuah pilihan yang pada akhirnya adalah sebuah keputusan.

Kapan sebuah keputusan yang dimaksud itu ada di depan saya? Ya, tentu saat saya mengerjakan sebuah projek editing atau saat menyunting dan bahkan saat melakukan tugas penerjemahan. Keputusan tersebut muncul ketika harus memilih mana yang tepat digunakan sebagai istilah dari suatu kata sumber yang akurat, pas, sesuai konteks dalam bahasa target.

Bahasan kesatu: popularitas. Biasanya saya menggunakan jasa Google Search. Yakni dengan mengetikkan kata yang dipersoalkan ke dalam kotak dan setelah itu muncul hasil dari penelusuran saya. Ada sebuah angka yang memberikan indikasi kepada saya seberapa banyak kata yang saya cari itu banyak digunakan orang. Setidaknya di jagat maya ini.

Kedua: sumber rujukan KBBI versi online aka daring atau offline alias luring. Biasanya untuk yang luring atau yang fisik atau berbentuk kitab cetak ada baiknya menggunakan yang paling terkini edisinya. Tapi untuk yang daring alias online hal ini tidak demikian, alasannya adalah karena masalah hak cipta untuk pangkalan datanya (database). Jadi, silakan dipilih mana yang memuaskan hasrat Anda.

Ketiga: pengguna atau klien aka the customer adalah raja.

Wajah Baru – Agustus 2014

Seiring dengan adanya waktu luang di luar kesibukan sebagai penerjemah (penerjemah dan juru bahasa, juga editor) saya meluangkan waktu untuk belajar kembali.

Salah satu keutamaan seorang profesional menurut saya adalah kesungguhannya untuk terus belajar, memperbaiki kemampuan yang sudah dimiliki sehingga menjadi lebih baik lagi – klise. Begitulah.

Saat ini saya berkesempatan untuk membenahi situs web saya ini. Tujuan utamanya adalah selain karena adanya waktu luang, saat ini jika seseorang sedang “online”, tidak melulu di depan desktopnya atau laptopnya.

Bisa saja mereka melihat berita terbaru ataupun mencari berita gosip melalui perangkat bergeraknya, baik itu tablet semisal iPad, ataupun melalui perangkat seluler berplatform iOS maupun Android.

Seiring dengan kondisi ini, saya tentunya berpikir apakah situs web saya bisa dilihat melalui perangkat selain yang konvensional yakni selain dari desktop atau pun laptop?

Menurut berita ini, tentu beralasan jika saya harus membenahi situs saya.

Upgrading Windows for an Indonesian Translator

As an Indonesian translator having the latest Windows means you will need to set aside your cash and TIME for an upgrade. I have had the opportunity to upgrade my Windows because the project I was working in my Firefox wasn’t performing well. I asked a colleague and friend on this and he suggested that this might have to do with software. In simple term you’ve got to upgrade.

Asking my friend if I should upgrade or not was still my biggest concern. I’m in my comfort zone with my tools. Having to upgrade means having to learn again new things, and spend time on it. A luxury I wish not spending. But ALAS…

I decided to take that step and bought the upgrade only to have it install almost a week after I had bought it. And as soon as the product key was at my disposal, I quickly followed the instruction on how to set it up.

The first challenge that I was faced with was back-up. I had loads of files that needed back-up. Thanks to my 1 TB external hard drive, after some deleting of files, I had my files backed up from my precious tool – my notebook aka my laptop.

The second challenge was the downloading of the Windows upgrade. And, of course, comes the biggest challenge, the installing. At first, the upgrade was far from a success, it was a failure and unsuccessful. It turned out that I had encrypted the hard drive with a TrueCrypt software. Back again and find and browsed the Net and re-learned myself with the procedure. It took some time, but finally the search was over and I have the information at my disposal and march on…

And, in the end after some time on the decrypting, I was able to install the software successfully. Yes? No!

I had another challenge the product key was not accepted. Then, I turned again to my beloved Google Search, and found out that, I had to have a new product key, so I contacted my seller, the seller said the product key will come the next day.

So, this is just a tiny recollection of my time outside translating, editing, interpreting, and other stuff relating to my work. Yes… software and IT.

I hope this can be a lesson learnt for others that trying, trying, and trying is key to success on finding the solution to your challenges and resolving your IT software issue.

This may sound tedious and laborious but this is slot in time that a translator must have and should accommodate in staying in line and updated with the industries’ (localization/translation and IT/software) essentials.

Windows 9 is approaching…

Almost a month after I’ve installed my Windows 8, yes, I’ve just upgraded, somewhere in the universe of Internet, I saw this:

It seems that doing the upgrading is an evolution and yet the software upgrades of Windows is a revolution.

As far as I’m concerned, as an Indonesian translator, I’ve only got one thing to say and do.

Wait and see.

I’ve only just awaken to this and yet this was 2012… and now it’s nearing the end of 2014.

It seems IT is a revolutionary thing and the mind set of a translator or someone in the industry of localization is moving in an evolutionary way – i.e ME, but I guess one can run after one has achieved a steady foot walking. Anyway… we shall see.

Peralatan Penerjemah “Tools of the trade”

Sudah lama saya tidak menulis, dan kali ini terlintas di pikiran saya mengenai peralatan seorang penerjemah profesional.

Sebagai seorang penerjemah profesional, Anda dituntut untuk memiliki peralatan yang memadai. Hal ini dapat diterjemahkan sebagai memiliki peralatan yang terbaik.

Bagi seorang profesional, di dalam bidang apa pun termasuk penerjemahan, mengeluarkan biaya untuk peralatan tentu ada perhitungannya. Jika Anda baru memulai tentunya juga pertimbangkan peralatan yang sesuai dengan kantong Anda. Dan bagi seorang penerjemah profesional yang sudah malang melintang, peralatan yang terbaik adalah sebuah keharusan.

Peralatan pertama bagi penerjemah profesional tentunya adalah sebuah komputer, baik itu sebuah Desktop atau pun Notebook/Laptop, maka Anda pasti perlu juga pertimbangan lain. Dalam hal ini tentu spesifikasi komputer yang Anda perlukan.

Bagi yang mobilitas tinggi saya sarankan komputer jinjing yang Anda perlukan atau sebuah Notebook atau Laptop.

Ada banyak merek, dan jenis yang ada. Yang perlu Anda pertimbangkan adalah anggaran dan keperluan Anda dalam melakukan penerjemahan.

Jika Anda hanya terbiasa menerjemahkan dengan Microsoft Word dan keluarganya, saya rasa Anda cukup memiliki spesifikasi yang tidak terlalu tinggi. Penerjemah Indonesia – Menjadi seorang profesional

Sebagai penerjemah profesional, sebuah kata asing, mungkin, saya selalu punya pandangan positif aka selalu berupaya untuk optimistik. Dalam tulisan saya kali ini saya ingin berkata-kata positif sebagai penerjemah.

Mengapa optimistik dan berupaya berkata-kata positif?

Sebagai penerjemah Indonesia, dan seseorang yang berprofesi sebagai penerjemah profesional, saya ingin optimisme saya menular kepada siapapun. Maka dari itu pancaran keoptismismean saya ini saya tuangkan dalam tulisan ini.

Sebagai seorang penerjemah profesional, saya ingin 2013 menjadi tahun yang baik bagi saya. Tentu untuk dapat melihat hal ini tahun 2012 juga perlu saya jadikan rujukan untuk melangkah ke 2013 dengan optimisme yang tinggi.

Refleksi akhir tahun 2012

Bulan Desember dalam penanggalan Masehi adalah bulan terakhir. Lazim dalam hal ini adalah refleksi akhir tahun. Mengapa? Ya untuk mengukur dan mencari kebaikan dan ketidakbaikan yang telah dilakukan agar ketidakbaikan dapat menjadi baik dan kebaikan menjadi lebih baik lagi.

Umumnya juga menjelang periode baru ada rencana-rencana baru yang dipaparkan untuk diimplementasikan. Cara terbaik perencanaan ini adalah dengan mencari panutan. Panutan bisa dipadupadankan dari beberapa narasumber.

Mengenai panutan ini di bidang penerjemahan kian banyak yang dapat dijadikan contoh. Asal kita dapat mencari dan memilih yang kita anggap dapat dijadikan model terbaik.

Jadi, akhir tahun ini mari kita lakukan pencerminan, perencanaan dan penelusuran model agar menjadi lebih baik.

Sebagai penerjemah profesional, dan juga sebagai juru bahasa profesional, aktivitas semacam ini dapat kita lakukan demi memperbaiki profesi kita bersama. Mari menjadi lebih baik dan berbagi.

Lydia Callis – Bintang Juru Bahasa Isyarat Kota New York

Siapa tak kenal Michael Bloomberg. Selain pengusaha ia juga walikota New York. Sebagai pejabat publik Bloomberg juga mempekerjakan juru bahasa, terutama untuk mempermudah penyebaran informasi, tak terkecuali mempekerjakan juru bahasa isyarat.

Juru bahasa isyarat yang dipekerjakan adalah Lydia Callis.

Ahli ilmu bahasa aka linguis – Linguist

Per definisi dalam KBBI alias Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, linguis adalah

ahli ilmu bahasa, ahli linguistik.

Menyebut diri sebagai penerjemah kadang mau tapi terkendala dengan sebuah pertanyaan: berapa banyak bahasa yang dikuasai?

Jadi, istilah linguis lebih saya senangi untuk menyebut diri, tetapi terkadang juga agak berat menamai diri sebagai seseorang yang “ahli”.

Namun tulisan yang di bawah ini membuat hati saya agak lega. Saya ambil yang di bawah ini dari buku David Crystal.

Saya bisa ‘ngeles’ seperti penjelasan di atas bahwa cukup hanya dengan menguasai satu bahasa seseorang bisa menyebut diri sebagai linguis.

Tapi, seandainya saya bisa menguasai bahasa-bahasa asing selain bahasa Inggris, atau bahasa yang lain tentu saya ingin sekali melakukannya. Beberapa bahasa lain yang ingin saya pelajari adalah Bahasa Arab, Bahasa Prancis, Bahasa Jerman, dan mungkin Bahasa Spanyol.

Doakan saja, semoga saya diberikan energi untuk terus belajar bahasa dan menguasai lebih dari satu bahasa asing.

Interpreters’ Booth in Simultaneous Interpreting

As an interpreter most of the time during simultaneous interpreting, a booth for the interpreting process is needed. The typical interpreting booth has a large clear glass screen in the front. This is important, as it will help the interpreter see the speaker and will help interpreters have a better visual of what is going on outside the booth.

Interpreting Booth

In the booth, an interpreting system equipped with a microphone, a headset, a control console, and sometimes, a monitor is present. This will allow the interpreter to have a closer look at the speaker. The interpreting system has, usually, a mute button that will help the interpreter to block any unwanted sound or noises when he or she needs to converse with other interpreters.

During the interpreting process inside the booth, the interpreter via headsets, listens to the speaker or speakers and simultaneously interprets into a microphone. The participants of the event or the audience can only hear the interpretation via  the headsets which are provided before the event begins. This helps minimize disturbance whether for the interpreter or the audience.
