    Commonly Asked Questions

Counselling is in itself a professional and confidential service offered by psychologists to assist a person in becoming more emotionally healthy and self-aware. Individuals, couples, and families can seek counselling to help them address all sorts of issues in their lives. During counselling, you have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of your life, your situation, and everyone around you.

Psychologists are trained to study the science of mental processes and human behaviour through research findings. Research-based methods are used to help people reduce stress and change ways in their behaviour and thinking that can harm them. These methods will hopefully help facilitate self-awareness and a better outlook in life.

All People Psychology psychologists have at least four years of university experience. They also have completed two more years of further university education, or two years of supervision from a registered psychologist. Our psychologists who hold a specialist title such as Clinical Psychologist have completed at least six years of university education.

Given their practice, psychologists are trained to be able to use a wide variety of therapy and counselling methods. This means the clients themselves play an important part in making these sessions work as the psychologists will try to understand the thoughts, actions, and feelings of their patients.

Psychologists, however, do not use drug-based treatments and do not prescribe medication. They can consult the help of trained professionals such as GPs who may be able to prescribe medication when necessary.

Your dedicated People Psychology practitioner is capable of writing a psychological report, which is sometimes needed for situations such as TAC, WorkCover claims, Disability Support Pension and court proceedings.

These psychological reports cost a fee separate to your psychological consultations. We will however make sure to discuss the nature of these costs with you in detail prior to writing the report. This also means you have to pay for the report in full before you get your copy.

As stated in the Psychology Board of Australia’s Code of Ethics, all counselling sessions are confidential and private. The information you share during these sessions will only be used for assessing, diagnosing, and treating your situation.

However, there are limitations to these rules. For instance, if there’s an immediate risk to you or people you know, or if your file has been subpoenaed by the court.

Counselling is for anyone who wants to take their first step towards a renewed perspective in life. Counselling can help you develop the skills necessary to understand and cope with various issues that are happening around you and the people you live your life with.

It’s natural to feel nervous if you’ve never attended a counselling session before. However, it’s important to understand that it more or less is a session done through conversation. Your People Psychology psychologist may ask “What brings you here today?” and use it as a springboard for you to open up about your current situation, your views in life, and your life in general. Your psychologist may eventually explain what you can expect from the rest of the counselling sessions in addition to the strategies he or she thinks may help you cope and adjust to your situation.

Everyone is inherently different, and as such we all have our own ways of coping with issues. This means people who seek counselling don’t get the same treatment. Sometimes, people get to resolve their issues with a small numbers of sessions. Sometimes, others prefer to work on their long-term emotional development and as such schedule sessions regularly.

In our Melbourne CBD & Brighton offices, we offer day, evening and Saturday appointments. Practice hours are: 8am – 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 6pm on Saturdays. We also offer telehealth online appointments Australia-wide.

When we think of talking to someone about our problems, not a lot of people come up. This is especially the case when we think of talking about our mental health issues, especially when there are instances where some people attach stigma, judgment, and prejudice on the matter. This might be part of the reason why a lot of people hesitate to talk about these issues with their peers, friends, and even family. Unfortunately, sometimes this means people with mental health concerns who need help the most tend to keep their problems to themselves, which can have negative repercussions in the long run.

Here at People Psychology Melbourne CBD & Brighton, we aim to remove the stigma and judgment from discussing mental health issues by advocating that it’s normal to consult psychologists when you have concerns about your mental health, and we try our best to make sure we give our clients – and perhaps you if you decide to seek our services – the best care there is to provide within our skill set.

If you’re interested to know more about People Psychology and the services we offer to everyone, then you’ve come to right place. We cater to clients from all walks of life as our psychologists themselves encountered their own share of problems throughout the course of their studies. We know the value of having someone to talk to and having people who could help us find ways to solve our problems – and this is the kind of philosophy we bring to our company. Our client-based approach is something we take pride in, and our dedication to our craft is what continues to motivate us.

Just because you are working a 9-5 job doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take time to take care of your mental and emotional well-being.

Anita Bonollo, Principal Psychologist, established People Psychology in order to help people from all walks of life who seek counselling in the Melbourne CBD, Brighton, Toorak, Double Bay NSW, and via Australia-wide online telehealth. Her desire to help others has fostered a kind of culture we have here at People Psychology that ensures that we are always dedicated and passionate regarding our clients’ needs, and this desire to help continues to fuel our passion each day.

Anita and our team of psychologists are especially experienced working with people through Medicare, WorkCover, NDIS, TAC and other focused initiatives.

Anita and our team can help anyone suffering from issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and other situations. Our team’s knowledge and experience with these issues have allowed us to help a wide variety of clients from different backgrounds, and we have learned through experience that our client-based approach is enhanced through tailoring therapy methods to our clients.

We believe that a psychological practice should always be a safe place that prioritises the well-being and safety of our clients. From there, we can then focus on helping you feel safer and far more stable for positive changes in your life. This is why we always strive to ensure we provide you with a safe and comfortable space where you can share your sentiments without feeling overwhelmed or judged by others. Our psychologists aim to provide the kind of environment you’ll need in order to be able to share your feelings and thoughts, and at the same time be on the receiving end of advice and tips that could be helpful to you in the long run.

Our team has experience managing a wide variety of issues inside and outside work. Our experience working with individuals, children, couples, families, and organisations have provided us with the foresight necessary to try to formulate a way for you to achieve your goals, feel safe, and feel better about your life. Our skilled psychologists can help clients find a way to improve their lives, and the lives of their loved ones. We understand how some mental health issues can be too overwhelming to bear for many, but we also believe that no issue is unsolvable.

Our office in the CBD also serves as a “network” to reach out to organisations and companies that may need workshops and training programs to help both employers and employees develop greater skills in areas such as management training, social intelligence, elite performance coaching, as well as proven focused therapy.

Anita has a special 10-Day Program and other initiatives and projects that are geared towards all kinds of presenting client issues.

Given that we come from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, models and interests, this also means we always have a psychologist at hand with a style that can be a match for your needs. One thing we all have in common, however, is to ensure that our therapy is always solution-focused. This means our methods will always be tailored to what we think is best for you.

Our team is more than equipped with the kinds of therapy techniques, strategies, and tips they have garnered and developed throughout many years of experience. We make sure the things we let you try and advise you to do are backed by research, and we make sure you fully understand our intentions as we provide these suggestions. Our consultation process aims to make sure you feel comfortable and safe with our psychologists. We will try to work with you in identifying your immediate needs, and through your conversations, your psychologist can find a way to make a plan suitable for your needs.
