Ear Wax Treatments

Micro-suction – This is our preferred method. It is safe, comfortable and pain-free. It involves the use of a binocular microscope which gives a clear and magnified view of the ear canal. A fine, low-pressure suction device then removes ear wax obstructions safely.

Instrumentation – This gentle method relies on the use of a probe and is effective for harder sections of wax which are not too deep in the ear

Syringing – Warm water is syringed into the ear in a low and gentle, pulsing motion which will not damage the eardrum

Endoscopic suction – This procedure manoeuvres the outer ear cartilage to enable access to wax build-up otherwise difficult to reach. An endoscope is used to view the ear canal while the ear wax is being removed.

What should you do about ear wax?

If the wax isn’t causing any problems, then its best left alone, the ear is self-cleaning and the wax should naturally clear, so it’s unnecessary to try and remove the wax yourself. If you notice wax on the outer ear then this can be wiped over with a clean cloth and that may be all that is needed.

Sometimes the wax may build up, particularly if it’s very dry or if the person has a narrow canal or a hairy ear canal. Wax may also build up if it has been pushed down the canal by cotton buds, hearing aids, hair clips or other implements, cotton buds can also irritate the ear canal and strip it of its natural oils, this can cause it to feel itchy.

If water gets into the eardrum during swimming or showering, then this can cause the wax to expand, giving it a ‘blocked’ feeling in the ear and increasing the perception of tinnitus.
