One of the best areas in the Alentejo to find gluten free restaurants and cafés is the coastal town of Aljezur. During our stay there, we enjoyed three great gluten free places, which we would love to share with you. On top, you will also find small supermarkets or organic stores in Aljezur, offering a range of certified gluten free products. If you are a celiac or you just eat without gluten, this region in the Alentejo can be a great place for your next vacation.
Starting your day with a gluten free breakfast at ‘The Bakery’
One of the places we usually started our day was The Bakery which is a very small bakery and offers gluten free as well as sugar free plates. Pay attention that this space is not entirely gluten free, but if you clarify your dietary restrictions beforehand, they always have a great gluten free breakfast choice.
Enjoy a gluten free pizza at ‘Arte Bianca’
This was definitely our go-to place during our stay and we visited pizzeria Arte Bianca in Aljezur nearly every day to enjoy a nice dinner. For us, who have already tried several gluten free pizza places all over the world, these were one of the best pizzas. They were not so thin and the taste was amazing. Finally, even some of their desserts were gluten free and rounded up our beautiful days at the coast.
It has also to be mentioned that during summertime, we would recommend to book a table before, as this is a very popular place in the area. Nevertheless, Arte Bianca has two restaurants in Aljezur (one in Arrifana and one in Aljezur – not far from each other). If we would have to choose, we preferred the one in Arrifana as it is close to the coast and the space is beautiful to enjoy a sunset through the big windows of the restaurant.
Relax with ceremonial cacao and gluten free chocolate brownies at ‘Roots’
The last place we visited a few times was the café Roots Aljezur close to the center of the town. This small café offers a great variety of delicious warm and cold drinks, but also freshly baked waffles, brownies and more. This place is also not 100% gluten free, but you will for sure have a great selection to choose from, as they often leave out gluten in their plates.
