Counseling for Abuse or Neglect

Counseling abused, neglected or maltreated children is arguably one of the most difficult tasks practitioners face as a professional. To begin with, all United States law regarding child abuse require that helping counselors report suspected child abuse to the police or to Children's Protective Services.

However, this is a difficult thing to do for a therapist, since there is always the risk that reporting will erode the trust the child has already placed on the therapist. It may also create mistrust or misunderstanding with the child's parents. So this is an extremely delicate subject that all therapists need to approach with caution.

First of all, child maltreatment can occur in many different forms. These include neglect of the child; emotional and or physical abuse; sexual abuse and more. So for a therapist, the first thing to do is to identify the nature and the degree of the maltreatment. If he feels that the child is seriously at risk if he or she keeps continuing living with the parents, he must contact and report the case to Children's Protective Services.

However, not all cases of child neglect or abuse fall into such serious categories. And in many cases, proper intervention from a skilled and caring therapist may help solve the issue and erase the mental scars the child has experienced as a result of neglect and abuse.

Therapy for childhood Neglect

In this article, we will focus particularly on the types of child neglect cases that can still be effectively handled by an individual therapist. Whenever we hear of child abuse or parental maltreatment, the general tendency is to regard the parents or guardians of the child as utterly inhumane creatures (or even depraved, or pervert, etc.). However, to go by the available statistics, the reality of the situation is somewhat different.

For example, poverty is found to be one of the main causes of child neglect and abuse in the US. It has been found that parents with an annual income of less than $ 15,000 are 45 times more likely to neglect and maltreat their offspring compared to parents with an annual income of over $ 30,000.

Next, parents who are not in sound mental health (caused by anxiety, depression, everyday stress, falling income level, drug and alcohol abuse, etc.) as well as many single parents (especially single mothers with an inadequate support network) are also highly likely to neglect their kids or even maltreat them.

In such case, the intervention from a therapist can prove fruitful.

Therapy for child Neglect: The Approach

The first task of a counselor when treating a maltreated child is to create an environment where the child will feel safe, secure and most importantly cared for. Using play situations (structured or unstructured), acting out role plays, reading stories, using puppets, artwork or music---there are many ways to create an atmosphere where the child will feel safe and relaxed and which will help create a strong bond between the child and the therapist.

From the therapist's point of view, the play situations are important since a child often, during play, reveals traumatic events of his early years. Also, the way the child behaves during these free play sessions provide the counselor with valuable insights on how the child has made his own adaptations or adjustments to the maltreatment they have experienced. Identifying these is crucial for a therapist since only then, he or she can teach the child more effective and appropriate ways of interaction and bonding.
