We recently visited the Elephants Rest African Garden Gallery in Callington for afternoon tea and to catch up with owners Bob & Cheryl Kovarskis. Bob & Cheryl are keen overland adventurers with experience camping in the African wilderness amongst marauding wildlife.
Back in 2013 they embarked on a 15 month African adventure covering Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Along for the ride was their Landrover Defender 130 and Travelander Tray Back Camper which was packed into a container for the seaward journey.
If you attended the last Caravan & Camping Show at the Adelaide Showgrounds and came past our stand, you would have seen their vehicle and camper and possibly even spoken to Bob himself.
Both Bob & Cheryl are strong advocates for overlanding and their website includes plenty of tips for African travel, including information on freighting your vehicle, safaris and more.
Their African Garden Gallery has been setup to showcase the African travel experience. There any many large animal wood carvings throughout the garden and artifacts purchased during their travels.
Morning and afternoon teas are available on the weekend, so its a great place to chill out in the shade, chat and chow down on some freshly baked produce. There’s also a gift shop.
The Gallery supports a number of African charities. What started as a child sponsorship of World Vision in 2000 has morphed into something much larger. They now support two families and a wider community. Their fundraising campaigns have paid for medical equipment for doctors clinics; they’ve undertaken works programs at schools to build and maintain classrooms; and even paid the wages of a teacher including putting him through a university degree in teaching. All proceeds from the gallery and gift shop support these charities.
