Welcome to the friendliest little store around. Now under new ownership, we look forward to continuing the country bakery tradition, reviving some old-fashioned entertainment, and building a home for locals to congregate and visitors to learn about the history and beauty of the NC High Country. Scroll down to check out What’s Baking and What’s Happening at the Mercantile. Follow our blog (What’s New) for weekly updates on the building (we’re making a few changes), general business progress, and news about what’s been going on in Todd.

About Us

Welcome to The Todd Mercantile with Sarah and Will. We purchased this historically rich and delightfully quirky building from Emilie Enzmann in June 2023 and are excited to bring food and frivolity back to the space. Our goal is to run The Todd Mercantile as a local, rural grocer and simple country bakery, offering a combination of shelf-stable items, local produce, homemade baked goods, pre-made sandwiches, and flat breads. Keeping with tradition, we plan to reopen the porch and upstairs as spaces for live music, dancing, and community events, as well as featuring the work of local artisans. We hope you’ll join us on our adventure to grow a successful family business that helps to sustain our local community and celebrate all things Appalachia!

What’s Baking

Sourdough

In addition to our own bakes, we’re excited to feature items from local baker Isabella D’Aurizio. Her sourdough is delicious with some homemade pimento cheese and a slice of fresh tomato!

Cranberry Orange Scones

Blending our favorite ingredients from a few recipes, these scones use all-purpose flour, heavy cream, and orange peel zest & juice. Fresh frozen cranberries keep them cold prior to baking and add that fresh cranberry flavor to every bite.

Blueberry Lemon Scones

Featuring the same standard ingredients as our Cranberry Orange Scones, these offer that perfect summer flavor combo with fresh-squeezed lemon juice, a little lemon zest, and fresh frozen blueberries. Glazed with lemon goat cheese when we’ve got it!

Cinnamon Rolls

We know that people have come from far and wide for many years to enjoy the cinnamon rolls at The Mercantile, so we’re keeping that tradition alive with a recipe from the incredible Kelly Fields (The Good Book of Southern Baking) that we alter slightly by replacing the vanilla with maple syrup.

Cheddar and Chive Scones

Harkening back to some Appalachian ancestry with this Scottish recipe from Paul Hollywood’s British Baking book, we think fresh chives (or scallions, depending on what we’ve got available) really turn these up a notch. Perfectly savory and substantial.
