Wisdom Tooth Removal At capital oral surgery

Wisdom teeth are also called the third molars. They are the final permanent teeth to emerge, typically around the age of 17 to the mid-twenties. Though some patients’ wisdom teeth emerge with no problems, oftentimes wisdom teeth are impacted and need to be extracted. If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth can cause a variety of problems, including pain, infection, damage to other teeth or to the bone, problems during orthodontic treatment and future oral health complications.

WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOUR WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL

During the wisdom tooth removal consultation, Dr. Lew will discuss the procedure in detail, including the type of anesthesia patients will receive and the pre and post-surgical instructions patients should follow. During the consultation, patients are encouraged to ask any questions or concerns they may have. The procedure is almost always performed outpatient, meaning that patients can go home right after surgery that day.

Recovering From Wisdom Tooth Removal

After surgery, patients should closely follow Dr. Lew’s instructions. On the day of the surgery, rest and replace gauze as necessary. You can resume normal activities the next day but should avoid strenuous activity for about a week, or as directed by Dr. Lew. Patients can expect some pain and soreness, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and the application of an ice pack on the extraction site. Eat soft foods for the first couple of days before transitioning to semi-solid foods. Make sure to avoid spicy or chewy foods that could irritate the extraction site. Avoid brushing the extraction site and use a saltwater rinse as outlined. If you experience severe pain, fever or excessive bleeding, or notice a bad taste in your mouth, call our office at (512) 584-9751.
