About this Item
Nouvelle edition. 4to. [8], 293, [11] pp. With 38 double page plates mounted on stubs, four of them folding. In contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt. The bibliography of La theorie et la pratique du jardinage is complicated by the fact that the work was first published anonymously (1709), then under initials, then as by Alexandre le Blond. He was the noted French garden designer and architect, a pupil of Le Notre, who designed the parterres illustrated in this volume. Indeed, Le Blond was responsible for more than simply the engravings in this work. According to the well-informed connoisseur Pierre-Jean Mariette, chronicler of French artists, he laid out the structural "canvas" of the work and oversaw in detail its writing. The English editions of the book have Le Blond's name on the title page. Le Blond also worked for Peter the Great on Petrodvorets (Peterhof) at St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). Heraldic bookplate for the Biblioteca Peruzzi to front pastedown and a warm and heartfelt manuscript inscription gifting the volume from Contessa Eliza Peruzzi to Francesca [Fanny] Alexander to ffep. The countess (nee Eustafiew) of Russian origin, was a concert pianist who had been one of Chopin's favourite students. Both joints split but holding firm on slips. End-caps chipped. Letter-piece later replacement. Seller Inventory # PS.697
