This was the first appearance in print of of one of Orwell's most famous essays, 'Boys' Weeklies' though it was due to appear in the first collection of Orwell's essays (Inside the Whale) and duly did so within a few weeks of its coming out here. Horizon, edited by Cyril Connolly, was the premier literary review of the 1940s and published original work by many great figures of the time including, in addition to Orwell, WH Auden, Dylan Thomas, EM Forster and Evelyn Waugh. Other contributors to this issue (No 3 March 1941) include WH Auden (his poem 'In Memory of Sigmund Freud' who had died six months earlier), John Betjeman and Stephen Spender. This copy of the magazine, now over eighty years old, is admirably well preserved: paper wrapper intact with no tears apart from a small chip at the bottom of the spine, and few marks (some light spotting on the front panel but none on the top, fore or bottom edges.
