First UK edition, first impression, signed and dated "2/6/77", by Tenzing Norgay on the title page. This is Tenzing's second autobiography, written 25 years after the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. Signed copies are uncommon, especially in such collectible condition. "This autobiography focuses on the post-war Tenzing who, encouraged by Prime Miniester Nehru, was instrumental in establishing the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling in 1954 to popularize mountaineering as a sport, as well as train sherpas for expeditions. Barnes has succeeded in conveying Tenzing's spontaneous enthusiasm, strength of character, and directness of mind" (Khorana, p. 39). The Nepali-Indian mountaineer Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986), born Namgyal Wangdi, spent the first period of his life herding yaks. In 1953, he joined the New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary in conquering Everest, thereby becoming one of the first two men to stand on the peak. In 1978, Norgay founded Tenzing Norgay Adventures, later run by his son Jamling Tenzing Norgay, who himself reached the summit of Everest in 1996. Another edition was printed in New Delhi in the same year. Provenance: blind stamp on the front free endpaper, "From the Library of G. Harcharan Singh, GHS". This is likely Dr. Harcharan Singh (1914 2006), an Indian dramatist and writer. Neate T18. Meena Khorana, The Indian Subcontinent in Literature, 1991. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver. With pictorial dust jacket. With 15 half-tone plates (one double-page), 8 colour plates, illustrations in text. Minor dampstaining to top edge; jacket with edges lightly creased, small mark to rear panel, offsetting to endpapers, unclipped: a very good copy in very good jacket. Seller Inventory # 164996
