Our government and college has deemed us essential services during this lockdown but only for emergency and acute care patients. I don’t consider myself a direct frontline health worker, but I am so very privileged to give direct care to those patients in need and to avoid having them go to a hospital, using stringent health procedures for their safety. Going forward, we will all need to be aware of overall health issues that may effect us, our staff and other patients. Clinics will need to review patient waiting times and monitor our patients more closely to determine the need for referral to the appropriate health discipline. We as health providers should all work together cooperatively  to avoid future complications by treating our patients in a timely and effective manner, and in a clean and safe environment. This is now the time to combine our health strategies for a healthier tomorrow.

(more) Whether you offer long term care plans or one time treatments really depends on the patients you see and treat every day, There is really no set answer to that question as there are different patients you see in your career. Your one time treatments can evolve into long term care if that is the best solution for your patients.  There are patients that simply need one time treatment to correct a minor issue and to encourage them to make positive changes to prevent reoccurrences. They should never feel dependent on your care but rather use you, their doctor, as their health coach and to stay healthy.

If the pain appears to be a simple strain, and not from a severe trauma, watchful waiting and gentle treatment including mobilization of joints and muscles is usually all that’s required. Especially when the condition is improving nicely. If the patient is elderly, has a questionable history of previous illness such as cancer, or had a fall or trauma and has not been showing improvement, then xrays are one of many diagnostic tools to rule out pathology or something more serious. Using sound clinical judgment is always the best approach.

(more) That’s a good question. No matter what pain you suffer from, patients want safe and effective treatment. First off, do your homework and check online the credibility and responses from patients in the area regarding local chiropractors. Any good chiropractor should do a thorough history and exam to see whether this pain is indeed a chiropractic issue. Usually a good history and exam will lead to an appropriate treatment that brings good results. Look at everything such as type of pain, how long it’s been there, have you taken medication or seen other doctors, etc. Communication and trust with your health care provider is important. Give your treatment time, but don’t fall for ongoing treatment especially if you are seeing little change. Today’s chiropractic uses several types of treatments and should focus on what works. Once your feeling better, your treatment should be weaned off allowing you the opportunity to see how you can avoid reoccurring pain. Periodic visits throughout the year makes sense to see how your doing and to keep things functioning as best as possible. And finally, remember you are the patient. Never be afraid to ask questions regarding your progress and care. If it doesn’t make sense or someone refuses to answer your concerns, find another doctor. Hope this helps!

They need relief and want to be out of pain. Follow up treatment is where things get more interesting. This is where trust in your services and educating your patients on prevention really shine. Patients do NOT want to keep coming to your office forever, but they need to depend and trust you for coaching and guidance to prevent further reoccurrences. Several factors have to be looked at. Their age, activity level, work status, pain levels, etc. Periodic maintenance visits either monthly or even seasonally are easy to accept. People need to know they are always welcomed back to your office in time of need, or simply to check out something that might be concerning to them. Offering products in your office keeps your office and services in their mind. Updating and posting health tips on social media also goes a long way reminding them the importance of regular checkups. We have all heard the term, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!”. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t make it better!!
