Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa: Movement, Breath, and Posture in the Primary Series Paperback – April 24, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
This book is sure to help reverse the unfortunate misperception that Ashtanga is too difficult for the average student or only meant to be practiced by advanced students. With this book, David uses an engaging balance of seriousness and playfulness to reveal the inherent logic and universal accessibility of the Ashtanga Yoga method. This means that not just Ashtanga students, but students from any style, including beginners and those who are new to Ashtanga Yoga, will find a wise and trustworthy guide for entering into a powerful learning method.
The instructions are presented in an effective, action-packed bullet-point style that provides a continuous flow of bite-sized bits of information from start to finish. The skillfully articulated instructions focus on technical cues for doing the transitions and poses of the Primary Series combined with a pleasing weave of cues on pranayama (controlling the breath), vinyasa (transitions), mudra, (energetic seals/gestures), bandha (energetic locks), drsti (gazing points), meditation, philosophy, Indian folklore, and the five elements.
In 1996, David Garrigues was awarded a teaching certificate from late yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois—he’s one of only thirty teachers in the world to receive this distinguished, highly regarded honor. For three decades, David has been teaching yoga with great passion, inventiveness, and curiosity. He has a thriving on-line yoga studio that specializes in Mysore-style classes and theme-based intensives. He travels the world offering workshops, in-depth studies, teacher trainings, and retreats and is also the founder the Asana Kitchen video instruction series, a leading on-line yoga learning resource on Youtube.
David’s students form a diverse, open-hearted global learning community, a circle of Hatha yoga lovers who are devoted to applying the teachings of Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga in ways that promote physical, psychological, and spiritual growth. This book provides an excellent entrance into David’s unique, potent way of teaching. By being both a dedicated yoga master and deep lover of the art of writing, David has crafted an instant classic on Ashtanga Yoga that is sure to be found beside the mats of present and future generations of yoga students.

Book contents:
- A breakdown of the vinyasa count, with both the "counted" and "implied" breaths
- A photo model corresponding to each breath count performing said pose or transition
- Descriptions of every pose and transition in the series. For poses and transitions that are repeated in the series, David gives a unique description for each occurrence, shedding light on different aspects or keys.
Where this book excels:
- Gives a very clear presentation of the breath count and vinyasas (even differentiating between the "explicit" and "implied" breaths)
-It is equal parts artistic and scientific. You could use it to learn the poses and breath count of the primary series, or, if the practice is already familiar to you, you could use it to extract hidden gems and subtleties.
- Beautifully details the transitions of the series. Equal weight is given to transitions and postures, which is a perspective you will not find in many -- if any-- other books (but is fitting for this dynamic style of yoga!)
- The "essence" and proper energetic work (including bandhas) of each posture is captured, beyond just the basic anatomical alignment (which you can find in many other sources).
- Beautiful imagery and writing for what *could* be a rather textbook read!
Since starting this book, I am consistently uncovering hidden gems in the Ashtanga practice. It's like having a whole new lens through which to approach the series. Really, this book has pulled me out of an "age of darkness" in my practice and made the familiar intriguing again.
Buy yourself a copy, leave it close to your mat, and I assure you it will be of service for years to come.
I had the chance to attend David’s workshop in Sri Lanka. David is an inspiring teacher with immense knowledge from over three decades of self-practice, teaching and dedication.
Spoiler alert: it took David five years of long and hard work to write this book!

Spoiler alert: it took David five years of long and hard work to write this book!
Remaining faithful to the traditional origins and development of the Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa method, his creative and frequently poetic imagery describes and teaches many glossed-over details of the practice in a unique way. This intimate imagery invites and inspires students to develop their own ways of seeing the method within the deep historical framework that Mr. Garrigues obviously knows so well.
His “Vinyasa meta view” notes are worth the price of entry alone. It’s my opinion that David Garrigues believes that the Ashtanga Vinyasa method is a living, breathing practice that draws on deep tradition, and yet is created anew by each new practitioner. His attention and presentation of this fact through all the careful text in this book will pull the Ashtanga Vinyasa method into the 21st century and beyond.
Beginners and lifelong practitioners will all find fresh inspiration and information. It's a multilayered book that is useful to all.

The Grid:
By employing a simple grid, the book systematically presents EVERYTHING you need at a glance for your daily rendez-vous on the mat, including the full vinyasa counts. This makes it a perfect Handbook for Practice!
The Directions:
David’s 4 decades of experience make their presence felt in the myriad approaches offered to every asana, every side, every Vinyāsa. He breaks down the asana and vinyasa actions in the instructions - attempting to put before you the larger cause - of developing skill in action by learning HOW to go into action.
Nuggets of Wisdom:
The beautiful illustrations, Exploration of the elements, the Crouch and Spring Mentality, the Meta-views that often include meditations from ancient texts like the Vignyana Bhairava Tantra, metaphors like the Russian dancers, etc. is my Favourite part about the book!
For Everyone crazy about Ashtanga: Beginner, Seasoned Practitioner, Teacher alike, the book is a must-have.
What I hope will improve: The hardcover spiral bound version is unavailable in India. To someone who will want to refer to the book on a regular basis, this is torture. Since this book’s a keeper, I will want to keep it for longer!
Go get this treasure trove, and journey on to self-discovery! 🌼
