This book describes thoughts around building a business, making some money, and not losing that money. Let me explain...
I have done two principal things in tandem professionally:
1. I grew, as what is considered a rainmaker, a great legal practice in healthcare with a wonderful team of colleagues. I have spent my career with McGuireWoods, a great law firm.
2. I grew, with an amazing partner, the leading business-to-business healthcare media company, Becker’s HealthCare. The focus was on developing a great niche-driven company, growing strong teams with outstanding co-leaders, and serving our clients in the best way possible.
I also went to Harvard Law School and had the chance to coach and teach President Obama when I was a teaching assistant to him and several other brilliant students (he is much smarter than I am). Early on, I became a certified public accountant.
In building these businesses and accompanying net worth, I made both good decisions and bad decisions around business development and money management. I was invested heavily in tech companies before the initial tech downfalls. I lost money in bond funds when bond yields rose. These losses led me to really dig in and study how I want to manage our money and investments. I learned a lot about how to allocate money in a way that works for me and my mindset. I wrote this book to share what I’ve learned over the years from both my successes and my failures.
This book covers two core topics: (1) how to build a business and (2) how to manage your money as you grow it and not mess it up.
