In 2000, after a long bureaucratic struggle straight out of Kafka, Jesse Braverman was removed as coach of the varsity baseball team of Bethlehem Central High School of Bethlehem, New York, nearly destroying him. But the baseball gods were not done with the beloved diamond strategist. Hired by La Salle Institute of Troy, Braverman took its baseball team, the Cadets, to new heights, including an unprecedented twenty-seven-game winning streak. Written with distinguished journalist and his long-time friend Gordon F. Sander, Comeback Coach tells the story of Braverman’s remarkable, dual career as multi-sport athletic coach and special education teacher. Packed with human interest, Coach follows Jesse’s forty-year journey from the sandlot baseball fields of his youth, learning about life and baseball at the knee of his mentor, Joe Austin—with whom he would be elected to the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015—to his initial successes with his numerous Bethlehem teams; to his heartbreaking firing and inspiring “redemption” with the Cadets.

A story of how one man spends his entire career as a teacher of Special Ed students , and mentor to many, husband, son and coach of baseball, basketball, soccer during school after school. A story of the good roles he played and the evil of the people who tried to take him down. The fight he had to fight. The hurt that stayed with him. I admit I am not a sports person at all and there is a great deal of Mr. Bravermans play by play throughout the book, but I found myself enjoying the process of teaching our children valuable lessons with his coaching methods. Full disclosure our daughter was a student a this school and her basketball coach was Jesse. She is now 50 years old but we still remember when.

I haven’t started reading this book yet , but it’s a story I , in part , watched happen . He was my daughters soccer coach and an all around great guy who gave up his time on weekends to allow kids to come and play pick up ball at the junior high, just for the love of the game and the kids . When my book arrived , I messaged him and asked him to sign it . He met me the following night and not only signed it but talked to me for an hour about his story ! A true giving spirit . This is a must read for everyone!!!

This is a book that can be enjoyed by both men and women. Though there are not enough adjectives to describe the wonderful coach that Jesse was and still is, there is much more to this story than coaching. This story starts when he is just a small child and goes to present time. It was very moving. For more than forty years, he has been a teacher, a mentor and a friend to hundreds of children, who keep in contact long after they are adults. Couldn’t put it down!

The Comeback Coach has given me a special insight of Jesse and his family. Growing up as a friend of Jesse’s brother, I knew the type of people they were. People who stood by their convictions and cared about others. The book verified my feeling that Jesse, as his mentor Joe Austin, gave their all for the youth of their communities. Great book for all to read!

A wonderful read and inspiring story. Jesse has done a great service in memorializing Joe Austin and documenting how one can overcome adversity and ultimately prevail. A good teacher and a good coach can change a life.
