I thought the same, until I realized a few things:
1. The translation engine on the software available today is often limited by the developer's ability to translate the language with their engine, e.g. Google only translates with its own engine - this T1 uses multiple sources, from Google to DeepL to Microsoft Bing to... you get it - to make the translation as accurate as possible based on the chosen language etc. without you having to chose the "best" engine for your language. And yes, they all differ vastly in quality of output/translation accuracy.
2. On no app available that I found can you transcribe entire conversations/lectures/conference calls without any limitations in length. Often you have to press the (software) button to listen and after a while it stops listening and then it forgets what you said. This little device never stops listening if you want in "Listen Mode", records everything, immediately translates it from and to your desired language and also keeps everything saved/in memory for later use - perfect for conference calls with different languages - for which I use it! It worked perfectly well so far, even with small errors I can understand the main points and that makes up for it 100% already in costs for my use case as the guy in the room with many different languages I might not speak.
3. It comes with a built-in eSIM and 2 years (!) of data traffic for the translation engines from the moment you first power it on (see photo). That does not mean you can surf the internet, but you can use online translations, photo translations, utilizing the newest engines, for 2 years world wide (!!) for free included in the initial purchase price - which is, I think, a great value for money and just makes it even better on its own, especially if you use it often and on travels. I can see this also help you if you go somewhere a bit remote and you don't have an internet SIM yet to help you figure out how to get a prepaid card etc. or to your hotel...
4. This is *not* your phone - what I mean is, I can hand this to my colleague or leave it on the table for a meeting or even hand it to a stranger/waitress etc. and don't have to worry about any interruptions, calls, and of course, that someone accesses my private data while I am not around - or worse, runs off with it LOL - it has a single purpose: translate. And that is actually a good feeling and makes it better to just "throw it into the room" or hand it to people for their perusal.
5. This thing can house a nano sim of any kind on top of the esim and turn into a hot spot. That is actually a cool little extra feature for travel - just pop in a local sim and turn on hot spot mode and boom, you have a Wifi hot spot you can share with yourself or your travel group and nobody needs to sacrifice their battery on their mobile phone or device in general - I thought this is worth mentioning, I did not know this when I got it.
Additionally, I found that the manufacturing company, TimeKettle, updates the system regularly and the latest update added even more languages to the camera translation function, which works well by the way.
Not to forget, you do *not* pay any *monthly* fee at all after purchase of the device - many other companies charge you for their translation engines (e.g. DeepL) and this little thing seems to get developed further each month.
The device itself, just in comparison to a mobile phone, has very solid build quality and is responsive, and, what I felt was the coolest thing, dedicated buttons for each language when the translation mode is in "chat mode" - so you can really physically press the button for the language and while you hold it the blue or red light shines and it won't stop listening - you cannot do that with any software I have found, they all stop after a while of listening and you have to constantly "re push" the button. This is fantastic if someone wants to speak longer to answer a question etc.
Also, when you press either button on the side it immediately starts listening, even if you were not in the "app" for chat. Double clicking the power-on button also is a short cut function for quick questions/help in the preferred language of your choice and you can even pre-set your own sentences there so you can immediately ask certain questions - e.g. "does this contain nuts? I am allergic to nuts" - which could be super helpful, especially if you 100% want to avoid that the thing you want to ask is not correctly translated.
I see a great potential for this little machine and hope the developer updates it with even better translation engines in the future. So far I do not regret the purchase at all, as I can use this exactly for my use case, conferences, and it works well.
Review addition:
I saw a lot of people in the other reviews, before I bought it, complaining about the chat mode. Do not speak to the device "from the top" but from the direction indicated for the language you speak - one microphone picks up the language you speak, the other direction picks up the foreign language - and you can tell by the light that shines which language is being "listened" to. I saw people here try English/Foreign language and speak from the top and the device clearly thinks you are speaking from the Foreign direction and of course the result is garbage...

Let's start with the quality of the translation. When I first started using it, the translation quality was not very good. So I read the manual carefully and followed the instructions to adjust the distance and angle between my mouth and the T1, as well as paying attention to the volume of speech, the speed of speech, the length of pauses and so on, and the quality of the translation has improved considerably and is exactly what I expected.
I tried all the modes of use of the T1, item by item, and they all gave me generally satisfactory results.
The T1 is also very easy to use, especially when travelling, and translations can be started at the push of a button.
Of course, there are some differences between machine translation and human translation, but for $299 to "hire" a lifelong translator, I think it's well worth it.
Timekettle T1, highly recommended!
It will *generally* work ok if you're in a substantially populated area, but even on the edge of a city it starts to struggle, don't count on the offline mode whatsoever, offline mode is a lie.
